What's an encoder?

The thing you downloaded is actually an mpeg decoder. Like all other video formats, mpeg works by compressing the raw data (how this compression is done determines the particular format (i.e., the trade-off between video quality and music quality)). Once you have the video file on your machine, you need to "decompress" it to be able to view it. That's what the Elecard decorder (or codec, as they are often called) does--real-time decoding of the compressed video. (You can think of it as getting a zip file, which you have to decompress before you can really do anything useful with it; in the case of zip files, though, the decompression is a one-time thing). Hope this helps!

The same notion holds for images, videos, etc., etc.

Maybe this can help :

- if the music is bad quality, try to get another copy of the video

- if you're talking about audio/video desynchronization, you can fix it easily with VirtualDub and any good codec (some must be already installed on your machine) -> the key option lies in Audio, Interleaving, Audio skew correction (enter a + or - delay there).

I just managed to record the clip by myself this morning (6h45 am!), precisely in raw data (mpeg2, satellite stream). Needless to say, the quality is very, very good :D (flawless in fact). Only problem : the file is 150 Mb!

I tried to compress it with DivX 5.05 Pro, and after my joy to see the quality at the beginning of the resulting AVI clip, I was disappointed : some parts of the video are compressed the wrong way or what, but it's crap (big squares etc...). The difference of quality during the same pass of encoding, on the same video, is unbelievable. :cry:

Has anyone had this kind of problem ?

Whoa buddy! This is of the JPVA clip? Man, I would love to get my hands on the raw data for it! If you can upload it somewhere, I'd be more than happy to encode it! :D



You may want to try encoding it in other formats. Like CPA mentioned, quicktime encoding is an option, as are various MPEG versions. I'm not exactly sure what free/shareware software exists to do this, if any exists at all (sorry, I use Premiere, so I don't have to worry about this :wink: ). Maybe someone else knows....?

I've put the file called 'Alizée - JPVA (Clip) 720x576 by R.Spark.mpg' in my Kazaa shared directory. It is indeed the straight conversion from the original PVA file, using PVA2MPG2 by Technotrend.

Can anyone try a search and tell me if he sees it ? Is it normal that I don't see my own files in the search results ? (I use Kazaa Lite, latest version)



Some encoders: I have in mind Vidomi or VirtualDub to generate avi files...

For me, this is the video encoded in the native format of the capture card (TV or sat-TV or cable). Not transformed in any way (=raw). Further transformations always induce some loss of data.



As far as I know, it is basically a 720x576, 25fps (frames per second), MPEG2-encoded video stream. For TV shows, that means it is the best quality one can achieve, since you can't RECEIVE better data (the data the satellite SENDS to you).

Unfortunately, raw videos are often very large. Thus the need to encode it to smaller formats, in order to distribute them via the web.

I like the quality of raw MPEG2 stream! I'd like to have all of her clips in MPEG2 format. They are good for burning SVCD CDs or DVD disks. I have DVB card in my PC, but never succeed to catch any of her video clips coming live from sat :-( And please - don't recompress before posting. It’s bad thing for quality, very bad...
