View Full Version : Burning CDs And File Names

I have a small problem. While I was burning some of my Alizée CDs in “Nero Express 6” I noticed that some file names aren’t the same before and after burning – they are shorter :uh?: ??!!!
For example, the whole name should be:
Alizée - 19-10-2003 - Performance & Interview - A Contre-Courant (Vivement Dimanche) - SERBIAN (by Zeka).srt
But after burning it is something like this:
Alizée - 19-10-2003 - Performance & Interview - A Contre-Courant (Vivement Dimanch.srt
I would like to know why the whole name wasn’t written on the CD and how to change it so it can fit the way I want. There must be a way to do that! I was trying to find that option in the “Nero Express 6”, but couldn’t find it. Also, I’m wondering if it has something to do with the CDs that I’m using – “Verbatim CD-R” at 52x (though I doubt it). Or if something like that can’t be done in “Nero”, then I would like to know what other program should I use in order to keep the original name.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

CD file formats has certain limitations.
You didn't say what format you used or what kind of directory structure you had so I cannot say if that was the problem.
But most likely, Nero will shorten them because they are incompatible with the CD file format specifications. It should warn you tho before shortening them (atleast Nero 4 and 5 did so, by default).
Make sure you have relax ISO & Joliet restrictions checked. Then it should allow 1024 character path length with 128 charters filenames.

I don't get it, what kind of format do you speak  ? Can you explain it in details, please :flowers: ?

No, it didn't warn me at all. I'll try that when I come home. Thanks.

This screen is where you select what kind of format the CD is.

I think what's happening is that it is limiting the filename to 64 or 65 characters. That's a power of two so it must have something to do with an old version of Windows/burning software. Good luck Zeka!

Yup. Joliet format limits the filename to 64 characters if not used relaxed resctrictions. Path length (path + filename combined) is limited to 128 characters without relaxed restrictions.
For ISO (without Joliet) it's even more strict (for level 2 ISO, it's 31 chars filename fox example and for level 1 it's 8 characters + 3 chars for extension).
But it has nothing to do with Windows or burning software. It's just the format specification. If you create software that doesn't overrides those specifications then your CD becomes unreadable on other systems (unless you install your own written drivers for them just to read that CD).
