I was wondering how many of the members here are part of hacker societies etc. I know a few of you . . . hiding behind this forum and are completely not who you say you are . . . come out with it. I know who you are but I will not say anything . . . a few of you are not even hackers but maybe not who you say you are :? I see you . . . . . . . . . . . . . and I know who you are!

I can admit it, I'm hacker. :)

Definition of hacker:

1. A person who enjoys exploring the details of programmable systems and how to stretch their capabilities, as opposed to most users, who prefer to learn only the minimum necessary. RFC1392, the Internet Users' Glossary, usefully amplifies this as: A person who delights in having an intimate understanding of the internal workings of a system, computers and computer networks in particular.

2. One who programs enthusiastically (even obsessively) or who enjoys programming rather than just theorizing about programming.

3. A person capable of appreciating hack value.

4. A person who is good at programming quickly.

5. An expert at a particular program, or one who frequently does work using it or on it; as in ‘a Unix hacker’. (Definitions 1 through 5 are correlated, and people who fit them congregate.)

6. An expert or enthusiast of any kind. One might be an astronomy hacker, for example.

7. One who enjoys the intellectual challenge of creatively overcoming or circumventing limitations.

Orion, I think the correct name is cracker, but many ppl mixes up crackers with hackers.

Yup, 'hacker' and 'cracker' is mixed up. The word 'hacker' has become synonym for 'cracker'. Cracker is hacker who abuses his skills, uses them for illegal activities.

That is unfortunate. Like in earlier post quoted, word 'hacker' originally had positive meaning. Gone are those days.... thanks to media...

Old school hackers and this new generation of hackers are two different things.

Old school hackers would break into systems for the persuit of knowledge and information about things relevent to them or the groups they represented. They were shadow soldiers against greedy conglomerates.

The new generation of hackers exploit for the benefit of themselves, reputation, and money. They do things to people for the sake of "status" and have no incling of remorse for the things they do to others. New hackers steal Identities to use for profit or aliases for other crimes.

Old hackers had respect for one another, they understood that the Governments held information on them and wanted to rebel for the sake of identity preservation. They possessed unique morals that were considered eccentric to moderm day social standards. Free information and the access to it, no secrets.

new hackers couldn't care less about these things and strive to persue their own motives.

It is night and day from ten years ago and now.

That site has gone under alot of issue before. The most recent one is where someone managed to force everyone to add his name to their buddy list or whatever it called, even though they didn't know him.

There are a few exploits. For example, you can leave blank comments by exploiting the bug.

hackers only discover exploits and security holes to improve security , crackers destroy everything on their path thats the diference :cheesy:

oO0Oorrr

fixer uppers find holes, to make them better. . . hence, fixer uppers. .
