It's a pretty old team, no one is born in the 80's, and it's not a team that scares the shit out of me, I see the Canadians and Czechs as bigger threats. Finland and Russia are outsiders, Finland doesn't have the greatest players, but they play pretty good as a team, whilst the Russians have great players but they use to have problems playing like a team.
I think the final is going to be Sweden-Canada and Sweden will win in overtime or penaltyshots, just like 1994 :cheesy:
The Swedish team will be presentated on thursday..

Goalies:
Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers
Mikael Tellqvist, Toronto Maple Leafs
Stefan Liv, HV71

Defence:
Christian Bäckman, St Louis Blues
Kim Johnson, Philadelphia Flyers
Kenny Jönsson, Rögle
Niklas Kronwall, Detroit Red Wings
Nicklas Lidström, Detroit Red Wings
Mattias Norström, Los Angeles Kings
Mattias Öhlund, Vancouver Canucks

Forwards:
Daniel Alfredsson, Ottawa
Per-Johan Axelsson, Boston Bruins
Peter Forsberg, Philadelphia Flyers
Mika Hannula, HV71
Jörgen Jönsson, Färjestad
Fredrik Modin, Tampa Bay Lightnings
Markus Näslund, Vancouver Canucks
Samuel Påhlsson, Anaheim Mighty Ducks
Mikael Samuelsson, Detroit Red Wings
Henrik Sedin, Vancouver Canucks
Daniel Sedin, Vancouver Canucks
Mats Sundin, Toronto Maple Leafs
Henrik Zetterberg, Detroit Red Wings

It's a fucking scandal that Holmström isn't in the team, he is extremely important in powerplay. I would replace Mika Hannula with Holmström and maybe P-J Axelsson with Jonathan Hedström from Anaheim, he's a real pain in the ass kind of player, and those are worth their weight in gold in tight games.
And I was surprised that Crosby didn´t make it to the Canadian team, but he will get hes chanses in the future..

On Wednesday the "real" olympics start 8) Näslund won't come, he is "injured", but he was replaced by Holmström :cheesy: I love when he stands infront of the net in powerplay! He gets like 100 crosscheckings every PP but he just stands infront of the net anyway!! He's a real man, he's not like Markus Näslund, hehe.. 8)
Now I just hope that Peter Forsberg will come.. He has a day to day groin injury.
He does what he wants to do on the ice  He's the worlds greatest! 1994 olympic final against Canada 8) :

I can't wait for men's ice hockey to start. That's the only event that counts to me. Jennifer Heil's gold medal yesterday was awesome though. I was really happy for her, especially after what happened in Salt Lake City.

because you have many sportlers, because you have change to choose best of them... but what we have... 1 500 000 people lives in Estonia, and how many of them are sportlers, how many of them are GOOD sportlers? and we are still taking medals, 3 medals for 1 500 000 people, it´s enough, nobody cares about record "who will take most medals?"

other countries care about the record!

i'll just say this

"the olympics bring countries together!!!!"

". . . . so they can beat eachother and see who has the best athletes  "

population has nothing to do with it. . . its about who wants to be the best. . . if that person decides they want to exel in a sport then they chose to do it. .. once again, nothing to do with population. if it did, china would win all the time.

Also, its no sportlers, its Athletes. "we have better athletes"

Its more common for people and websites to list them by total metals
I was talking about the right way, not the way used by some people... (beside, if you look at the official site you see that even there they are sorted by gold medals...)

The most used listing depends who you want to see on top positions. If it's good for your country then of course you list them by total amount, or if it's better to list them by gold medal amount then you do that....

But the right way is to lest them by amount of gold medals. That is because the gold medal is worth more than the other medals combined. The gold medalist is the winner, the others are losers. Respects to runner ups, they can have another try in next olympics. But until then, they are just losers.

Gaborik decided the game against Russia by scoring 2 great goals. He's totally awesome speedy winger.

On the other hand USA had lots of probs against Latvia so they ended up in 3-3 draw. Well done Latvia!

And finally i'd say we had a pretty good game against Switzerland... 5-0 was convincing enough. Jokinen and Selänne both scored twice.

loff
16th February 2006, 02:08
I don't think there's any good way of listing medals. 1 gold is worth more than 100 silver+100 bronze medals. I'd rather get 100 silver+100 bronze than a gold. Sure, I won't be the best, but I'm 2nd and 3rd in basically everything. It should be more like 1 gold = 2 silver = 4 bronze or something..

On a sidenote, I still consider Norway above Sweden, as always :]

Henrik
16th February 2006, 20:53
0-5.. Do i have to say more? Russia won.. but it wasn't that bad after all, Russia scored on their chanses but Sweden didn't.
This result was good in one way, now the swedish team knows what they have to work on. The special teams is one of those things.. Our PP sucked and so did our BP. And I must say that the russian goalie was incredible..

THE UK HAS WON IT'S FIRST MEDAL OF THE GAMES!

GB's Rudman takes skeleton silver

British skeleton star Rudman set the fastest time in practice
Slider Shelley Rudman raced to a silver medal - Britain's first at the 2006 Winter Olympics - in the women's Olympic skeleton on Thursday.
Rudman was lying in fourth place after the first run, but a sensational second slide put her on the podium in Cesana.

She recorded an overall time of two minutes, 1.06 seconds - 1.23 seconds behind Swiss champion Maya Pedersen.

"I just can't believe it. It feels really surreal," the 24-year-old from Wiltshire told BBC Sport.

"I'm really gobsmacked. I really wanted to get a bronze, so I'm certainly not complaining about a silver medal."

Rudman said her super second run came after advice from her coach Simon Timson and her boyfriend and fellow skeleton slider Kristan Bromley.

"I was just perfect on the second run," she went on.

"I normally go better on the second run, so I wasn't worried by being in fourth place after the first."

"I hope this result has put skeleton on the map and it will make a lot more people aware of skeleton and able to fund it," she said.

Rudman will be presented with her silver medal in Turin on Friday, at the same time as Bromley goes in the men's event.

"My heart is going to be split in two up there on the medals podium and also keeping an eye on the results, but I will try to watch the men's race," she said.

Coach Timson told the BBC she had put in a nerveless performance.

"She was as cool as a cucumber," he said.

"We knew that fourth was a good spot for her and if she got corner 17 right, then she'd do well.

"Everyone has worked their socks off and it's just such a fantastic result."

British Olympic chief Simon Clegg said Rudman's silver was a huge boost to the team.

"It's a great result for her, especially considering she's only been sliding for a couple of years," he said. "She went quickest in the final training run so we knew she would be competing in the medal zone.

"Before the Games we said one medal would be a success. We've got that in the first week and we're now expecting more great results in the second week."

Rudman's achievement was the all the more remarkable considering there is no proper skeleton track in Britain - just a push-start track at Bath University.

Alex Coomber's bronze provided the inspiration for Rudman

Despite her rapid rise in the sport, Rudman has also had to fund herself in her pursuit of a medal.

She has enjoyed the enthusiastic support of the people of her home town of Pewsey, who raised £4,000 for her with a canoe marathon.

Rudman's medal followed fellow Wiltshire woman Alex Coomber's bronze in the same competition in Salt Lake City four years ago.

But, while Coomber had been widely expected to strike gold, Rudman was considered an outside chance at best, having never previously reached the podium in her World Cup career.

Rudman, who is in her first full season in the sport, had never even laid on a skeleton sled until being inspired by Coomber's performance.

She went into the competition insisting she would consider a top 10 position a success and that anything beyond eighth would be beyond her wildest dreams.

Canada-Switzerland 0-2...oooops.

And Sweden won over Latvia with 6-1. Peter Forsberg had 2 assists, on the first and the fourth goal. He played in the 4th line today with Samuel Påhlsson and P-J Axelsson. Tomorrow he will probably play with Henrik Zetterberg and Thomas Holmström in the 2nd line. The goalscorers was Påhlsson, Lidström, Axelsson, Alfredsson, Zetterberg and Alfredsson again.

No, I have not forgotten that we lost 0-5, I wrote that earlier in the thread as you can see..
And the Czechs have been very arrogant so far in this tournament, only 4-1 against Grmany and 2-3 against Switzerland. But I think that they won't be so arrogant tonight against the Finns.
But Jaromir Jagr is a fucking diva! If I was a hockeyplayer, I wouldn't want him in my team. If his team doesn't play well, he just glides around on the ice and complains on the ref.. And I don't think Jagr has backchecked once in his whole life!

Sweden-USA 2-1. Mohahaha, it's always nice to beat the yanks :D . Alfredsson and Samuelsson scored the Swedish goals. It was a good intense game for the Swedish team, but the tempo wasn't that high.. Forsberg didn't play, he sat on the bench for the first time in 14 years :D He rested today because they didn't want to risk anything after his injury.. But he'll play against the slovaks on Tuesday.

Men's curling final has been played this evening: I think that those 1,4 million Finnish people did not have a great time: Canada has won with 10-4! In the sixth end they scored 6-0 (and they could have made it 7-0 easily with their last stone, but their skip played the last stone just too fast)! That is huge! If you imagine that a team has only 8 stones in an end! :P

Hyvä Routsi :D Finland hasn't lost yet in the olymics, but eventually the first loss will come 8) And that's gonna happend tomorrow 8) Forsberg will score another classical goal as he use to do in important games and Kronwall is gonna tackle Ruutu out of the game, but in a fair way.. He can do that without getting a match penalty :whistling:

Agreed, Sweden will win this one for sure

In my opinion, Sweden got no chance :) It will end 3-0 or 3-1 for Finland... But let's see :) Game is started, let's watch it, and i'll come back to check who was/were right :D But good luck to both teams !!!!

PS: 24 medals for Canada, they expected 25... That's really nice :)

I'm not going to speculate the results at all.. it will be a very tough game... and it could go either direction... but i know one thing for certain... you can't lose to Finland.. that doesn't exist in my world.. i always have hard time coming over the times when we lost against the finns.. but if we lose tomorrow then you won't see me here the next couple of months...

I guess that just shows how bad the rivalry is between our countries 8)

If Sweden wins tomorrow, it'll be the greatest moment in my life, but if we lose.. It would be the worst moment in my life. And thats not an understatement  I don't think north americans, russians or anyone else in the world can understand how much prestige it is in this game. Sweden vs Finland.. It doesn't get bigger than that.

They had good team in speed skating. Pretty much dominated it... And due to bad luck they even lost some medal(s) by DSQ in it (nothing dramatic, just lil' error on track that caused to disqualifying). Happened to watch that match...

From Wiki:

Ten of the eleven medals are from short track speed skating. Speedskaters Jin Sun-Yu and Ahn Hyun Soo were the second and third people to win three gold medals in Turin.

Gold

* Short track speed skating

o Ladies' 1000m: Jin Sun-Yu in a time of 1:32.859
o Ladies' 1500m: Jin Sun-Yu in a time of 2:23.494
o Ladies' 3000m Relay: Byun Chun-Sa, Jeon Da-Hye, Kang Yun-Mi, Jin Sun-Yu and Choi Eun-Kyung in a time of 4:17.04

Just stumbled across this... Sweden is in the lead.. but not for long i guess.. anyway it's kind of cool that such small countries as Finland and Sweden are doing so well!

"New World Rankings

For the first time since this system was introduced after the 2003 World Championship, the IIHF's World Rankings have a new name at the top of the standings. By advancing to the gold-medal game, Sweden has overtaken Canada as the number-one men's hockey nation. The World Rankings take into account countries' performance over a continuous four-year cycle. The current year (in this case, the Olympics) counts for 100% of total points available, the previous year 75%, two years ago 50%, and three years ago 25%. The maximum points available is 1,200 which is awarded to the champion. Here are the top ten nations on the men's side after the Olympics. These will no doubt change in May following the 2006 World Championship in Riga, Latvia.

1 Sweden--4,030
2 Canada--3,940
3 Czech Republic--3,930
4 Slovakia--3,805
5 Finland--3,765
6 Russia--3,725
7 USA--3,575
8 Switzerland--3,525
9 Latvia--3,335
10 Germany--3,270"

And the hockey team were in a bit of a hurry.. since they had NHL games the next day so...
