View Full Version : Variétés françaises

Jérémy Chatelain: My next album is called "Variétés françaises" (French variety), a little nose-thumbing at the amalgam that people create with all styles of music. When you come from "Star Ac," you know how that works. Now, I no longer want to disguise my music to follow a certain trend. "Variété" means varied, mixing lots of influences, not just a debased expression.
No this isn't another Jérémy thread, but rather a place to highlight any French artists that catch our interest at the moment. Let's try to keep the posts relevant and insightful, providing sample material whenever possible. The idea is broaden all our horizons to the world of variétés françaises!
I'll get the ball rolling in a moment with...

Nolwenn Leroy
Nolwenn was the winner of Star Academy 2, and until now has been producing some fairly generic variétés françaises (her first album was even written before hand for whomever would win the StarAc competition!). But that all changes with the release of her new album, Histoires Naturelles.
http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/127/pochettehistoiresnaturelles2zr.jpg
The album benefits from the personal touch of Laurent Voulzy.
Laurent Voulzy is a very well-known singer and songwriter .. He usually works with Alain Souchon (Another talented and delicious artist).
Better than a long speech, here is his official website, where you can have a look to his entire discography: http://www.laurentvoulzy.com/
He wrote and sang with Souchon "Rockcollection", that Alizée has performed when she was young.
Nolwenn's single has undoubtedly the Voulzy touch! He likes to mix French and English lyrics like in Nolwenn's single or in this one, for example (Mes nuits sans Kim Wild):
Link: http://rapidshare.de/files/8930262/Laurent_Voulzy_-_Mes_nuits_sans_Kim_Wilde.mp3.html
In my opinion he's a great artist though very discreet.
The disc's first single, Nolwenn Ohwo, has especially been making a splash on the MFI forum. Several people there compare it favorably to Alizée. The music video is equally well done. I love the little march at 2:13. Take a look:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=17AS42SI
http://rapidshare.de/files/8552904/nolwen_leroy_ohwo_.avi.html
Last, here's my personal review of the album. I've listened a few times and must say it is a very interesting disc! But overall the tracks are mixed.
nolwenn ohwo - best track on the disc, by far.
l'enfant cerf-volant - A worthy successor to Ohwo. Great track.
reste encore - Boring, boring, boring.
mon ange - Not as boring as the last track, but that's not saying much.
histoire naturelle - Much more interesting. Too bad the melody's a total rip-off of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"!
rien de mieux au monde - Now this is more like it! The atmospherics of the previous tracks meet a bit of rock.
mystère - Then the atmospherics come back with a vengeance in this good track.
les chimères (instrumental) - Filler, but nice.
le rêves des filles - Is this a Jenifer album? Boring.
endormie - Slow song. I hardly remember this track at all.
london fantasy - Nice! I thought those sirens were real!!!
mélusine - Good, but average.
j'aimais tant l'aimer - OMG, this track is so WEIRD. It starts out completely generic but then goes totally insane one minute before the end. What the hell where they thinking?!? You'll either love it or hate it. I love it! Biggest musical WTF I've heard in a long time!
So while this album does have it's share of generic and boring filler, overall it's quite a nice surprise that hit me out of nowhere with several amazing tracks, mind-blowing production (so rich, yet every sound is still so clear and distinct), and a great overall sound.

the lyrics of plus rien

mad about something that doesn't matter? have you even got a fucking brain inside that fucking skull of yours? just read the whole thread all over again. Read it A FEW times and see if you find why i'm frustrated. It has nothing to do with him speaking English fluently, i just picked that cause he annoyed me. Am i acting like the world revolves around me ? you're just saying that cause you have nothing else to say, just shows what kidn of person you are. and what the fuck is the point of saying "No one gives a shit what u think", no one ever gives a shit what anybody thinks nowadays, but the truth is they do. They just say they don't to try to make the other person feel bad.
Yep calling me a racist is pretty smart, as you're one yourself but you can't admit it to yourself, Everyone is racist to a certain degree, that means you're racist as well, so don't go calling me one dickhead. what a dumbfuck you are. god suck my fucking dick, i'm not even going to bother replying anymore.

Look, there's nothing wrong with dissent, and since this whole argument seems to have started with a difference of opinions, that's ok. However, what's not ok is that it's descended into personal attacks that do nothing to address the issue. If you want to get pissed off about opinions and be snarky about it, that's well and good. In fact that's how I usually am. But when insults start getting thrown about that have nothing to do with the original conflict of opinions, that's when there's a problem. If you want to get a bit heated during the argument, fine, but only if you're really keeping the argument in mind. But when you're not even addressing the issue anymore and just going for pure personal attacks, that's no good. If you're that determined to carry a personal disliking, either take it to MSN or spend some money on a phone call. If you can carry on this discussion while keeping the issue in mind, fine, but if purely personal attacks continue, we'll have to issue warnings.

I liked Nolwenn Leroy and that video you gave us, really good song and excellent video. Once again I wasn't wrong for trusting in your taste :cheesy: . I liked that magical part in the woods.
Did you hear about In Grid? It should be French music group, I think - I'm not sure if it's a group or just a singer and I'm too lazy to check it on the net  . I have a few songs at home and I'll try to upload some on Monday. The best things are "Tango" (my favourite one) and "Tu es foutu". But no video material, unfortunately. Anyway, it is really worth downloading.

When I heard this girl would be having some concerts while I'm in Paris next week, I decided to check her out. And she's really cool! Kinda a mix betweem Mylene, Alizée, and... Marilyn Manson.
Ok, that may sound weird, but I mean more conceptually than musically (her music is all across the scale, very hard to define or describe). On her first album, Et Alors, she played the role of a tramuatized girl. On her second disc, La reine des abeilles (the queen of the bees), she expands that concept in three sections: the MARSian Far West, Earthly Hell, and The Metamorphosis.
I made a quick little mix of three of my favorite songs. Check it out:

Here's her official site, where you can stream her videos and hear more song samples. There's even a version in Engish:

I just haven't ever made the connection between this girl and the girl on the CD... (yes, I don't read credits very carefully :) ).
But well... I listened those Melissa stuff and I'm not so sure about her. In the mix her voice sounds quite childish. Like Priscilla or something like that. Weak voice, I'd say. I like more strong voices like Fabian and Pausini, who can use the whole range of sound scale. In the music video, Melissa can't stand out really because of Lara's awesome voice.
Maybe I could listen to it occasionally but not often for sure. Maybe her voice will get stronger while she grows old. :)

Maybe, but that's part of the concept. It would be inappropriate for her to be singing these songs with a deeper voice (see especially Papa m'aime pas video on the official site). She was an actress before becoming a singer, and carries a lot of that mentality over to the music. She's basically playing a role, not herself at all (hence the Marilyn Manson parallels. Not surprisingly she's a fan of him). Her voice fits this "character" perfectly.
Anyway, I just got tickets to go see her next week, on the 18th, so I'm excited! :)

Snatcher,
I watched the Papa m'aime pas video and I can say it's well done and it has great idea behind it. If the concert will be original like that then it will be no doubtly nice memory to have.
But personally, I still don't like the voice. Actually, the video made me even more dislike the voice. I only like the idea behind it. :)
I don't see very long future for this artist (but maybe I'm wrong). I mean, it looks like this is one of those who has few nice songs around some original idea and then fades away from the stages... Like many has done in the past...

Well she's been around since 2003 (Et Alors!) already, never some big star but making music for her dedicated fans (such as myself now), which I think she'll continue doing. The venue I'm seeing her in, for example, isn't a big arena. It's small, maybe like 1,000 people or so. Most artists I listen to are like this, actually (Alizée and Mylene being the exception). You don't see em on TV or in the media, they're not stars. But the music goes on.
RMJ
15th January 2006, 11:34
Well, if she started 2003 she's still taking her first steps on the career. So can't say anything about her career with so little experience. As said, I could be wrong. Maybe she stays alive underground. It has happened before and why not with her, too.
What comes to my likings, I'm not seeking them from media either. Nor even care about medias opinion about them. I would have propably never found Alizée through media, as she doesn't exists in Finnish media (it was awfully unlikely conincident that I happened to hear her at my friend's place! Thanks for her!). Same thing pretty much every artists I have listened to. They are either 'world music' (= non-English) or long forgotten (by media. Not by fans) bands. All of them are out of fashion if you'd ask most people's opinion.

Most of those are totally unknown in the United States. When I see bands like Nightwish or Blind Guardian here, it's always with only around 1,000 other people. Iron Maiden is larger, but you still never ever see them on TV. As you know aside from some French artists, I'm a metalhead not a pop fan. And metal here is rather underground.

Iron Maiden isn't that well known anyways... It's always in the shadow of popular heavy bands like Metallica. Most of them are quite easy to translate (while some are pain in ass..). Here's my quick ones... Excuse the errors. :)
Gourmandises:
1. Me... Lolita
2. He or You
3. L'Alizé (name of wind. you can find exact explanation if you search the forum...)
4. J.B.G. (obvious answer to this when you look into lyrics)
5. My maquis (I'm not quite sure how to translate maquis into English... It means some kind of place anyways. Irrational or rational... Read the lyrics)
6. To speak softly (or 'to speak low')
7. Veni Vedi Vici (wrongly spelled Veni Vidi Vici)
8. Abracadabra (nonsense word used in spells by wizards :) )
9. Delicasies (one of many way to translate it... I'ts not very easy word)
10. What does young girl dream of (or something like that...)
MCE:
1. I'm Fed Up (or actually i think it's more rude... like 'I'm pissed off')
2. Against the Current
3. Toc De Mac (read Alizée's explanation of it)
4. Amélie said to me (?)
5. It's too late
6. Storm (would be the direct translation... )
7. I'm not twenty
8. Hey! Amigo! (Amigo is actually Spanish word... Means 'friend'.)
9. E-mail has wings
10. Youpidoo (possibly formed of 'youpi' which means 'yippee')
11. Heart already taken

Maquis a kind of plant native to Corsica. Though the word has also had other means that you can see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maquis
Veni Vidi Vici is the Latin phrase used by Julius Caesar meaning "I came, I saw, I Conquered", though as RMJ mentioned it's (deliberately?) misspelled in the song title.
Anyway, enough off-topic!

Dunno if you meant about Melissa Mars with that, but one of the reasons I like her is that she's definitely an artist. She's way too weird for mainstream pop, and the lyrics are far too dark (written by herself and her mother, they are about alienation, childhood trauma, and abuse). The audience at the concert was not your typical pop crowd. I'd say the average age was about 35. Unfortunately, due to her complexity she's not a very big selling artist in France at the moment (though a recent duet with Louis Bertignac has increased her exposure and is one of the reasons for the re-release of her second album). Squeak and Kiouty talked about her predicament awhile back on MFI:
Melody suggests that people think she's too weird. Now in America I could understand that being a problem since the sheep here seem only too happy to just listen to whatever Clear Channel feeds them (least-common-denominator programming has absolutely ruined television and radio here). But we're talking about France! Are the people there not any more accepting than us of music that's different? (different = interesting)
No, I don't think it's weirdness. Her failure is just due to a lack of promotion because record companies don't want to take risks. They to want to invest a lot for a young artist who they aren't sure will be a success.
That's why there's is so much promotion for all the Starac or pop idol "artists", but not for people who are adventurous, and who want to do something different.
Besides, I don't think France is so much better than the USA, regarding cultural stuff and people's spirit. If it had been better than the USA one day, it's just losing its advance lately : culture is not culture any more, it's just products, that peole buy : consumption era.
Universal, by releasing fake artists who sing always the same pop stuff, are building generations of people with bad taste for music. Then, people in France aren't much accepting at all, Squeak.
There are dumbasses and smart people in the USA as well as France.

Yup, one of it's translation really is small bush like tree (English name for it is macchia). Very dense, very hard to see through. Can be found everywhere in mediterranean sea area (not just on Corsica).
But obviously, the song doesn't literally mean that. It's mostlikely derived from it though. Dense bush, perfefect hiding place. Perfect place to be safe. The maquis more like of symbolic object for the place what song tells about.
Some lines that obviously (?) refers to that maquis fields:
C'est un dédale inextricable (it's inextricable maze)
Impénétrable aussi (also impenetrable)
C'est un refuge, chambre sans vue (it's a refuge, room without sight)

MC Solaar is a great francophone artist. You can blame my teacher and one classmate (who is now a good friend) for getting me into him. The thing with Solaar is that he's a poet. He's like Mylène Farmer in many ways, his lyrics have a wild array of word play. Double, triple meanings. Not to mention his sound is godly, even compared with people such as Mos Def.
His sound can be many things, including "gangster rap", though he works it in a very non-violent and poetic manner for the most part. His song "gangster moderne" includes punching sounds from Street Fighter II.

I think Air is pretty inspired. I have the video for Sexy Boy if anyone wants that uploaded, it's really groovy. I've been into trip hop so badly lately, especially with Portishead and Sneaker pimps, and Air adds that nice French touch. Plus, Gainsbourg is one of their influences, as well as Pink Floyd.
I had the video for All I Need, and I deleted it. I couldn't stand it, though it is an oldy for them. I just can't stand the whole rock and roll boyfriend and girlfriend type thing, saying that they don't need anything in life but each other and all that communist bullshit.

I want a traduction !

Well after the so called "trip-hop" craze was ignited by Portishead in 94, the mid 90's alternative music was marked by many artists who came out with like minded trip-hop/electropop music. Most notably Air from Paris and Sneaker Pimps from Reading, England (who collaborated with Marilyn Manson).
I have air's video "Sexy Boy" which is nice and moody, but I already mentioned the "all I need" video as annoying me with views typical of repressed teenagers rebelling against capitalistic society. A very annoying music video. Anyway thanks for the links, I haven't had the chance to get around to Air yet but have since become a full fledged Portishead and Sneaker Pimps fan.
The trend seems to have died out a bit, with many artists evolving, refining. Portishead has said they have been working on their 4th album for some time and want to make a come back, Sneaker Pimps also auditioned and hired a new female singer and have been trying to put together their 4th album comeback as well, with Chris Cornell taking the backseat again. Kelly Ali (Dayton) has embarked on a pretty much failed solo career spanning 2 titles thus far.
Another french artist who shares some more modern trip-hop/electropop influences is Emilie Simon.
Many of these electronic artists claim to take much influence from french artist Serge Gainsbourg, and a recent collaboration between 12 or so of these artists including Portishead is the album entitled Monsieur Gainsbourg revisited, with covers of his songs translated to english. Tracklisting and cover here: http://www.mf-international.com/viewtopic.php?t=795&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=75
:!: I just saw that Brian Molko is one of the artists on Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited. I'll have to check it out, and check him out. I'm unfamiliar with his music besides his cover with Indochine.
Trip-hop is a tricky label, though. A lot of the groups reject this labeling of them, but it's just something critics came up with to describe this new genre that didn't want to control itself. It's just one of those more specific subgenre labelings. It really doesn't sound much like Hip hop, but it's more of a minimalist, electro movement that has hit the mainstream and underground as well.

anyway, I just finished watching "Je Ferme Les Yeux" playing on TV5 just a min ago (caught it just in time). . . great song and I love the fresh and clean look of the video. It reminds me of the fact that Alizée's 3rd album will not have those "crazy" lyrics and be more like this, and Natasha's too. That's what I'm expecting, but with a little edge maybe . . . just maybe.
