i thought this thread would be good to talk about YOUR country, what the ups and downs are and anything like that. I WAS a simple person that never really cared enough to learn about the rest of the world but the US untill i came across this webite. It is so diverse with different kinds of people. because i have taken an interest in different countrys and continents, i have many questions, but maybe you guys can help.
just post random info about your country and where you live.
i live in the USA, california,
there are 50 states in this country,
We drive on the right hand side of the road, and the steering wheel is on the left,
i think i started if off, others from the US can help.

Well in New Zealand there are those who watch arty farty movies, use Apple computers, eat sushi, introduced the civil union bill and Vote 'communist' Labour.
Then there are those that hug trees, smoke weed, bike to work and Vote 'hippie' Greens.
And National Supporters who use pc's, have a job, eat food and not cuisine (and love alizee  ). As you can tell we are having an election coming up soon and its the first time I can vote! and yes Im voting National :)
Le Fidèle
30th July 2005, 09:57
so national is one voting party what is the other?
over hear, we have republicans and democrats,
republicans being conservative, save thier money, so on(george w bush) and although i'm a republican, im not as proud of bush as a was back in 2000. but hes looking out for our better interest, at least mine.
democrats being lessconservative, hippies, save the world, give the poor money and so on.

There is National, which isnt scared to make changes to make NZ a better place,
Labour which is very-much politically-correct and currently in power!
Greens which would probably put a tree before a human,
New Zealand First who want too see the back of immigrants.
NZ politics in a nutshell, well except those damn those 'commies'

here lives about 5.3 million people, from which 5% are swedish speaking. Finnish and Swedish are the official laguages here.
We got a female President, Tarja Halonen, and we were the second country(after New Zealand) to give the women the right to vote.
we got our independency 1917. before that we have belonged to both the Swedish and the Russian empire. Fought in both WW1 and WW2, and also had the time to have a own civil-war in between.
we're one of the european countries that uses Euros and Cents as currency.

Hmm, about Estonia, OK :)
1208 - 1227 - war for freedeom with germans, they won and estonia was until 1558 when Sweden, Poland and Danish came and kicks German ass, then Estonia was under Sweden, Danish and Poland pressure, then was another war in 1629 with denmark and sweden, sweden kicks denmarks ass and got Saarema :D then was another war in 1641 when was war between Poland and Sweden, Sweden wons and got ALL ESTONIA. Until 1700 when came Russians and kicks Sweden ass, 1710 - 1918 Estonia was under Russian pressure, 1918 Estonia got independence, democracy, until 1939 when Rippentrop and Molotov made MRP Pact and Soviet Union occupied Estonia, until 1941, then came Germany (Nazis) Estonia tries to get back independence, then, in 1944 Soviet Union kicks Hitlers ass and came back in Estonia, those times were very cruel and hard for Estonia cos Soviet Union made very cruel things with us, like rich people deportation in Cyberia. Then we were under Soviet Union pressure (USA betrayed us, but, yeah, bush apologizes for that :)) OK, then came 1991 and Estonians told to russians that get a fuck out of our country, and we have independence again :D
In Estonia is democracy, we are in Europe Union, Nato aso. It´s cool country, here are pretty girls, and language is damn hard, 1 french guy studyd that 2 months and told that he is giving up cos it´s doo fckn difficult :P but after 2 years he studyd that :D something more? :D

Ludicrous Maximus, sounds lovely. My future home for sure.
America: Never seems to be too much happening, 2 candidates who can win each election, we've had one candidate in power for like 6 years, it drags on and on and I hate him...
boring...
I hate living in the rust belt of the midwest, we are not on the cutting edge of anything we are just rusting, i want to live in L.A. as a filmmaker, if I became anything else i'd live in New York and probably do fashion or photography or be a history teacher or something... at least they are on the cutting edge. I can't stand people who have boring lives and nothing to live for and a predictable ending...
America has too much flyover country... we should just hand some off to Spain Germany France and England, see if they can do something interesting with it.
And we shouldn't depend on gas anymore and it should be illegal to own a truck... I was a best buy the other day and some young kid pulled up with a brand new pickup truck, raised, with all kinds of body kits and whatnot and a new paintjob. I was compelled to stone him to death...
He's the reason i'm slowly going broke paying for gas... 3 bucks a gallon... This is really making New York City seem more tempting... I'd have to have serious cash to live in L.A., and sit there in traffick for 2 hours everyday burning gas away...

Yeah, lucky you and your cheap gasoline. :( It's even same gas as in here! Comes from same god damn refinery! Pfft.. It's just not fair. :(
Same thing with Russia. We can go 1km over Finnish border to Russia and buy FINNISH gas at half the price what we pay here for it... sigh.. Tho the Russian gas is even cheaper. But it sucks. :)

rofl, Bush is conservative?! anyways...
I'm from Canada, very close to Quebec and the US. We also drive on the righthand side of the road and have the steering wheel on the left.
It's very cold here during the winter, and somewhat warm during the summer.
I can't really explain the government system here cause I don't really understand it myself. There are multiple parties, the major ones being Liberals, Conservatives, and NDP. Liberals are kinda in the middle, they're kinda conservative but won't hesitate to spend money. Currently they are being very conservative because Paul Martin is in power. Conservatives, well basically their name. And NDP wants to increase funds to healthcare, retirement funds, welfare, etc.
I'm a liberal, even after the sponsership scandal, the two other choices suck.
We have a population of 32.5million (tiny) and a land mass of 9million square kilometers.

Bikes. . . . . . :cheesy:
i'm the lance armstrong of my neigborhood!!!! o yeah!!!!
here in America (or at least where I've been), riding a bike is the quickest way to become a social outcast. People think riding a bike makes you look absurd, and a loser.
not coincidently, the best way to look cool is to own a huge, powerful, rude car. Perhaps bike riding looks too delicate and dainty. Anyway, I think it's so stupid. I spend no money, no time, I care nothing for my car basically... It's lucky if I check it's oil level. My car now, just like me last one, looks like a rustbucket of shit, but a car is the last thing i'll pony up for.

ages 5-10 its cool to have a bike, and you brag to your freinds of how fast you can go, and what tricks you can do.
ages 11-15 you branch out, to skateboards, bikes (only trickbikes or else your a loser!!) or the classic, have you mom drive you to where you need to go.
ages 16-19 only cars, anything else your a loser, unless your REALLY good at skatboarding

That's not true. at 20 and up you still get made fun of usually, and even if you don't, people mistake that you are poor because you aren't driving a gas guzzler as hard as you can and throwing finished lattas out the window... (or driving an elegant car as slowly as you can to show how much of a prick you are) and women sometimes think you don't have much "going on down there" because you can sit on a bicycle seat...
True...a man sitting on a bicylce seat isn't a very pleasant image, but hey...it's utilitarian, it gets you places. Cheaply.
I was never "cool" because on the offset I got a mountain bike, not a trick bike. Last time I checked there were no mountains in ohio...so I just always got made fun of.
My take, if I had the money, i'd get a powerful, elegant, or some type of neat car (an M5 more likely). Bu,t it would have to be the last thing i'd spend my money on, i'm not going to trade life expenses so that I can have nothing but a ridiculous car...it's pointless.
I don't even try to fit in. Sure I don't bike, but I don't drive anything nice either. I'm just one of those invisible people no one looks at on the road. I don't care, it would probably be the same for me if I lived somewhere in suburban europe too.
I do kinda like ninja motorcycles though... Those seem to work no matter what the situation.

Humans can only learn the hard way. We learn our lessons after the mistake lashes out at us. So why are humans still polluting? Because pollution hasn't had a direct global effect on us yet. Yes, there is the hole in the ozone, whole ecosystems destroyed, diseases popping up from high mercury levels, ddts, etc, global warming causing many problems, etc.
But the rich aren't affected. The poor have no power to do anything about it. The people who are doing something about pollution are frowned apon. A huge never ending circle.
I mean, in China and Japan, recycling are unheard of. Yet in Canada, recycling is almost a constant ritual.
It's just human nature :P

America = vastly overrated !! Modern day Rome i think.
With the 5 different poli sci classes I've been taking this term, even though they all seem to have a slight negative tint on the choices that our country has made, seeing just how amazingly complicated and difficult it really is to run our country has actually given me a bit of renewed appreciation for the good ol' US of A. And even though individual choices may have been marred by mininformation and overly zealous conviction, overall it seems like the country as a whole was still striving to "do right" in the overall sense of things. Especially that considering how powerful we are compared to every other nation, we probably could have brought a lot of insurmountable oppression on a lot of this planet if we didn't have a pretty sound structure set up as the backbone of our country. I can think of a lot of countries, where if they were in our position now, the world would be a much darker place. Anyway, just my thoughts.
Either way I'm still moving to France next year...

Not quite. History we know is the one invented by certain people. No one knows what happened back in the days, but I know a little bit of the secrets of every important 'historical' event.

I know about that too! The book who showed me the truth about it, is called 'Royal Flush' ('Chinta Sparta' - sorry, I forgot the author, but I can find it on any antique store in my city  ). But, the point is that our country is not corrupted because of itself, but because of the people who leads us (I think accidentally winners of the presidency award).

Well, it's kinda improper to blame a man for the mistakes that had been made in the past (near or far), but rather the ignorance people have, when the complain that the president isn't doying much for the country, even worse, he's aggravating our image and state of wellfare, when they should think that, wtf?? they voted for that bastard. That's a bad image I showed you. And I promised myself I wouldn't do it, but I had to.
The good image Romania has, is it's nature. Touristic sites are great here, come on people, visit us, you will never regret what beauties you will see here.

Like I said, Romania has a lot of great touristic sites. Here are the most important:
http://www.peles.ro/ - which is located in the mountain town of Sinaia, a great site to see, an old castle built in the late 1800's by great foreign architects brought and hired by King Carol I, http://www.deltadunarii.ro/frameset.asp - the Danube Delta, the greatest european rezervation, the unique biosphere reservation, which delights us with it's great swamps and river streams, last but not least, the fauna and flora which makes it unique, http://www.antipa.ro/index.html - the country's no. 1 natural history museum located in the north side of my city. More, yet to come. :cheesy:

The history of america started when this dude was kicked out of the kingdom of heaven. I'm not to sure what happened after that, most of it was a haze, but I know that it eventually resulted in the birth of the united states of america (which no longer deserves to be capitalized).
And also, not surprisingly, he is a distant ancestor of President Bush.

The rules of this forum say exactly that we don't have to respect anything in here except for Alizée, the mods, and the members. On with the rest of the discussion.
Talk of countries doesn't have to involve politics, there are other things that make up a country. I'm just saying this to avoid this becoming another political debate thread, but it's probably going to happen anyway. Still, the notion of a thread where you can talk about any aspect of a country is noble.

Bizz, i didn´t understand about this, sry.
Lestonie have home gouvernement ?
Estonia is independent country, we got first indepndence in 24 february 1918,
but in 1940 Soviet Union occupied us and we got independence again in 20 august 1991. Estonia is democracy country like Finland, Sweden, Norway or France.
Information:
After centuries of Danish, Swedish, German, and Russian rule, Estonia attained independence in 1918. Forcibly incorporated into the USSR in 1940, it regained its freedom in 1991, with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Since the last Russian troops left in 1994, Estonia has been free to promote economic and political ties with Western Europe. It joined both NATO and the EU in the spring of 2004.
