View Full Version : Smoking

Thought it would make for an interesting discussion, especially since some new laws passed in my state recently have me thinking about it.

Now, I don't deny that it's quite unhealthy, but I do enjoy smoking for a myriad of reasons. I do try not to smoke around those that have a problem with it as well. Now, what's irking me is that they've passed a law here banning smoking from all public places, even bars and pubs.

My problem with this, is that they aren't even giving the establishment the choice of putting in a smoking section or not. I wouldn't care if all the restaurants decided they didn't want anyone smoking, but I do care that they don't even have the choice. If there was a choice, and there was a real split between smokers and nonsmokers, there could be places for smokers and places for those that don't want to be around it. It's not a mind altering drug, you're not gonna smoke a cigarette then go nuts on someone or misdrive a car. It only harms the user as long as he's sepereated from non-users. It's no worse than overeating (which is a HUGE problem in the US), but they're acting like it is. They're taking personal responsibility away from us. If they can't put a food limit on people in resaturants, how can they do this? Just kinda ticks me off. Alcohol is much more dangerous, but they have no problem with that. Hypocritical? Yes.

What do you guys think? (feel free to discuss anything smoking related, not just this particular issue)

edit - as per request, I'll add a poll to see how many smokers we have here, purely for posterity of course

Well, they have banned smoking in places like that around here also. Scotland mainly.. But, some places still allow it, with signs. I can see the point of the rule as a non smoker, but my parents smoke and i don't really have a problem with it to be honest. If people smoke around me, i don't mind. I won't be living long enough anyway to suffer long term causes of cancer. I messed about with asbestos as a kid, all of us did.. so i'm probably f*cked anyway now lol..

If smokers want to smoke in pubs and clubs, that is fine. restaurants or places where little children attend, then i agree with non smoking. Even tho drinking is worse than smoking, one can't die from passive drinking. So i guess it makes sense to protect the public that are non smokers. I don't fully agree with it tho..

See, my problem is that Im'all for protecting those that don't want to be around it, but this can be accomplished with less extreme measures. As long as they make it more secluded, that'd be enough, then the smokers are only harming smokers. Any more extreme and it's like the government controlling how much tv we watch, or what kind of food we can eat. The government shouldn't control something beyond protecting other individuals. If it only harms the person, then it should be that person's problem.

DavidAlizée
22nd July 2005, 00:08
Well, thats the goverment for ya. They control so much, and want more. I would normally say, even tho you want smokers to smoke with other smokers, so its no big deal. Sure, that is a health risk for you. Granted you smoke, but i would like to believe that the rule was to protect the welfare of smokers also, but hoping they can cut down. i don't really believe that, i know it is just to protect non smokers in the long run. If the goverment could control how much Tv you can watch, the scary thing is, they would. Too much power..

Smoking in public places shouldn't be allowed - I welcome that law. Infact that law has been passed in many countries around here aswell.

Unfortunately many people I know are smokers, yet they have mentioned that when they are in a restaurant or any other food establishment - then even they don't feel like smoking. Supposedly it has got something to do with losing appetite.

Alcohol is much more dangerous, but they have no problem with that. Hypocritical? Yes. Most people have a nasty habbit - they want to breathe. Like ... all the time.

Lungs, brain and blood vessels are perhaps more important than liver and such, hence the "hypocrisy" ?

As for me, I don't smoke. I tried it once when I was 13 & it only took one huff & puff before I nearly choked to death. I don't like girls who smoke either. It reminds me of my dad's breath so a girl with my dad's breath would be impossible to appeal to me.

Despite of the seriousness of this thread, I found it funny when I first saw it on the General Discussions having the racy title of "[Poll] Smoking". Get it? Poll Smoking. Hahaha!! I'll shut up now.

Not really, no. There was a scientific study released, according to which it is humanly impossible to consume so much alcohol that it would start affecting your brain.

Oh man, always got sex on the mind... :P

I don't smoke either, and I absolutely hate being around people who do smoke. The one important difference in this case between drinking and smoking is that your health isn't at risk when you stand next to someone having a drink. There's no such thing as "second-hand drinking". Drunk driving, you say? Well that's not the alcohol doing the killing, it's the person. So, needless to say, I'm all in favor of banning smoking from public places. You want to kill yourself with cigarettes? Fine, go ahead and do that, but do it in private and don't get other people involved.

For me, one the downsides about visiting Europe is that people are smoking everywhere. That along with all the air pollution in Paris and Rome, I had some nasty black boogers at the end of each day. Eww...

I'm pretty much against smoking. Having a ciggarette or two at a party when you're drunk is ok in my books but chain smoking on the other hand is not. I have a cousin (my age) who smokes like an old movie star and it just sickens me when I hear him cough.

He says he's going to quit when he's 18. Yeah right.

My brother (who happens to be a fan of Alizée) managed to quit smoking by going cold turkey. I'm very happy for him and he says he feels so much better then when he was smoking.

Not only that, but there have been some counter arguments made by medical researchers and the FDA that second hand smoke is actually not proven to harm other people, since they aren't breathing in tar. Wether these counter arguments are subsidized by Big Tobacco or not remains a mystery, but they don't seem to be heard... There are so many publications that claim full proof in the damage of second hand smoke. I don't even know what to believe... Nor do I really car healthwise as far as I'm concerned.

I don't smoke, but if you blow smoke in my face i'm not going to look the other way either, i'm around it often.

As far as hypocritical legislature is concerned...wrap your brain around this. Alcohal is in every way, much worse than smoking pot. Not only for your health, but it is a "high" (in reality high and drunk are no different), and it is a MUCH stronger and more dangerous high than smoking pot. Make sense, no....

Yeah, I find it saddening when he coughs like that, too. He seems to pop outside for a smoke about twice and hour.

I don't have a problem with smokers, but if they blow smoke in my face I'm not going to put up with it. Chain smoking I disagree with, but I'm not going to force anyone to stop smoking, you know?

Once, when I was younger, I was curious. My dad gave me his smoke so that I could try (he knew what was gonna happen) and I chocked like hell, coughed for a full minute and swore I wouldn't touch a smoke anytime soon. I try to follow my brother (he's 23 and didn't smoke ONCE in his life). No smoking for me.

staos
22nd July 2005, 11:26
I smoked once out of curiousity because nearly everyone in my family including relatives smokes. I didn't choke but it did make my nose hurt really bad. It was like having water run into your nose...it fucking hurts. I haven't smoke ever since but because my father and two brothers smoke, I am sometimes around second hand smoke.

Now I really dont have a problem with people smoking because that is their right to do so and I dont really mind if people want to smoke in public areas either as long as they make the consciencious effort to move away or at least direct the smoke away from others who dont want to smell it. I also agree that the law they passed in your area is pretty messed up. It SHOULD be up to the owners to decide how thing go in their own stores and if it screws up their businesses that is their own problem. Besides, I am pretty sure that there are many resturants that divide their store into smoking/nonsmoking sections and if not they dont allow smoking at all inside.

But they'd be losing even more customers, because the people who really want to smoke in bars would travel to a different pub where the owner allows smoking.

I think the total ban in public places is a little strange. Here in NZ there's a ban on smoking in pubs/bars, and you have to step outside for a smoke. With that law you can't do even that?

Smoking is so bad for your health I guess its fine if your on your own away from other people eg in your back garden (its your body) or something but not in bars and clubs where others health will be harmed.

We got that law too, and i think it's great i hate when my hair is stinking after a night on the pub... and i think it's good for the bartenders.. a better environment for those who work there...

The funny thing is that the majority of the smokers here welcomed the law as well...

I used to smoke, very heavily - between 20-40 a day easily... depending upon how much we drank of course ;) (which was far far too much)... used to love smoking, blowing smoke rings, "chinese" waterfalls etc. I barely drink anymore as well - mainly because once I start drinking, I cannot stop until I am plastered (and also as when drunk, i started smoking again...). Now though, I manage to restrain myself after a few drinks no problem - and don't smoke at all.

Rolling tobacco has less chemicals (supposedly) than manufactured cigarettes, and you can get filters to put in rolled ciggies without any problem at all - to reduce the amount of tar you get.

I don't regret the smoking part, just the financial part. In the 7 years or so that I smoked (not smoked for 2 years now - went cold turkey, best thing I ever did) - I must have got through over £9000 total. To have that money would be very beneficial... and in your lifetime you'll spend about £40k on fags... with nothing to show for it (apart from buggered lungs).

Glad I no longer smoke, just wish I had never started...

Ron V.
23rd July 2005, 23:46

Ron V.

I've tried it without a filter, and while it is a bigger hit, it burns a bit too much, plus sometimes you get tobacco in your mouth, and it's not as sturdy as a regular smoke. I really like the convenience of just pulling one out of the pack and lighting up.

I could roll a perfect ciggie in about 10 seconds or so... and the baccie had flavour to it (although some were a bit nasty tasting). The part I disliked was that the paper was usually soaked in tar by the time you finished - and running your tongue over your lips - you could taste tar residue around there. It stained your teeth, your tongue - and your fingers alot quicker. The filter allows the tar to condense in it, literally "soaking" it up nicely - so that you don't get that part.

Admittedly, smoking without filter tasted creamy with a very thick smoke. That was all the vapourised tar though - condensing around your mouth etc. Kills taste buds like nothing else.

Smoke with filter is low, very low. And Lame
Fraid I am not sure what you mean... if you think putting a filter in rollies is lame - then its a personal choice.
I don't live my life by what other people think of me, or to what they think is good/looks good/is fashionable. People whom do that are weak personality wise as well as mentally - always looking towards others for approval.

I do smoke, because I like it. I don't smoke a lot, maybe 20 cigarettes a week... I smoke when I want to, not when I need to. I don't want to be dependant, I couldn't bare that.
As for public places, I think it should be allowed - and restaurants or pubs may choose if yes or not they want smokers in their places. Everybody should have the choice to go in a place where he/she can smoke or where nobody smokes.

Well, it gives me a certain amount of mental relaxation, kind of puts me at ease, especially if I'm in an awkward social situation. I'm doing my best to cancel out the health affects a bit by sticking to a pretty strict exercise regimen. Plus, everything gives you cancer these days.

Smoking (tobacco) is stupid. I say "stupid" because we all know how damaging it is. I told someone that I thought it was worse than heroin. They said that no one would kill or rob for smokes like they do for heroin. My comment was, "Just make it (smoking) illegal and watch what happens."

I had a friend who was an heroin addict. And no, it has nothing to do with smoking.
I can't believe you compared tobacco to heroin... You should see how is a person when this person has had a fix. When he/she is fucking high. And when, some hours later, his only idea is to do it again. Because he's so bad, because all his body hurts... and when your best friend wants to steal your money, strikes you just because he NEEDS this fucking heroin, you understand this has NOTHING to do with smoking tobacco or even with smoking everything you want.
So please, say to smokers they're stupid if you want to - but don't ever compare heroin to another drug, because it's the worst thing I know on earth.

David, its your car - tell him not to smoke! He should respect your wishes, after all - you are doing a favour for him. Why you should suffer (and your car), just so he can light up a few mins quicker than if he didn't have one... he isn't going to die if he waits is he? And who knows if any ash/"hot rocks" will fly out and burn the car (we nearly set my mates car on fire by accident once, simply due to a gust of wind blowing the cherry into the back - whilst we assumed it left the car  ). Overall, it aint worth it letting him smoke in the car - so tell him to stop!

Smoking is worse than heroin. It kills many more people. People who try to quit smoking go through agonizing weeks. As soon as a tense situation happens, many revert to smoking. Smokers can kill those they live with through second-hand smoke. Heroin users can't kill others just by being around them.

Smoking is shown in many movies and ads as being desirable and beneficial. Heroin is never shown as being desirable or beneficial.

If smoking were to be made illegal, I am sure many smokers would turn to illegal activities to obtain cigarettes.

I just smoked a Romeo y Julieta in the dead of night, peacefully on my veranda.
I have just found a place that sells the Gurkha grand reserve and the Artuo Fuente Opus X :)

Cigars are great for relaxing, while you enjoy the great taste of that hand rolled art. Cigarettes, though, give off a foul scent, imo . . . @ least when compared to a good cigar. One draw back to smoking good cigars (for those living outside the U.S.): The price for a gurkha in florida is $11-18. In Toronto its $50+ . . . the bastards

That's the bad news . . . the good news is that I saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to gieko!!

I forgot to mention: In order to get a true affect from second hand smoke, you have to be locked in a small room with many smokers for the theory to hold water. Otherwise public smoking will have no ill effects on anyone's health, unless the smoke just bothers you or you are allergic to it. For me I only smoke a cigar when I am home at night relaxing outside.
