View Full Version : I'm not "40"

I was walking along today with Alizee songs in my head (that happens pretty often) and I was wondering about the song "I'm not 20" which is pretty cool. Now that she IS 20, I wonder if she'll sing it anymore or change it later in her career to "I'm not 30" and hopefully even later to "I'm not 40"...... What do you guys think about that?

Well.. when she goes on tour, she probably will not be 20. Her birthday is sometime in August, and (almost definitely) won't start touring until the new album is out, after August. That's just from an English translation standpoint.
In French, "J'ai pas vingt ans," would that stand true if you were 21 years old? I know the direct translation is "I don't have 20 years," so technically she would have 20 years...
Yeah.. so basically this post stated something, and then disproved what it said.

Sometimes the simplest of questions and bring a flood of speculation. I would guess that she would sing that song for another 5 years... appending it as she went, then, move on to introduce her more recent work when ever that would be.
Personally I am at a loss as to what that song really means. Is she asking for respect? Is the song reminding her lover that she is not obligated to anything until she is 20? Does the song signify her trying to hold on to a pleasent child hood? Not wanting to grow up and to hold onto that inner youth that most people let die after 21? Is she sick of the monotony of relationships and trying to spice hers up?
She only knows the truth to these questions... and I an intrigued enough to stick around and find out.

What I got from the song is that she has plenty of time to do whatever she wants, she's not even 20! It says "On est vielle à vingt ans," which means "One is old at twenty." Meaning, I suppose, that she wouldn't be able to do as much, or perhaps have as much freedom, when she is 20. Just my outlook on it, sure to be quite different to other people.

Maybe she is reminding the reader (in this case someone close to her) that she doesn't want to rush anything... Jeremy?

I don't think it works quite the way you're thinking in French, D13U. I imagine it's much like the Spanish "tengo veiteciente años" which literally means "I have 20 years" so it basically means you have 20 years that you have lived, which would be inclusive.

I don't get that? I was just asking a question about whether or not you think she'd still include it in her set list now that she's older than 20. Yeah Yeah not just yet but in a few weeks so why split hairs?
You all failed to point out that most artists will continue to sing their hits in concert for many years because they know the seasoned fans want to hear the older material. So my question pertained to that and the conflict with doing the song past the age of 20 and would she then change it to 30 and so on.....
As for what I got out of the meaning of the song, it was a "in between stages of life" song. Like Alizee herself has said about the big shoe, it's womanly but she's not quite a woman and not a little girl anymore. I think she's saying "I'm not a little girl, but I'm not old either, so lets just have fun and not worry about the big things in life that come with age" or something along those lines.
In fact, if the song is an in between stages of life song, it would still apply to not being 30 and not being 40 because those ages are also milestones and points along the way that bring changes in your life..... so it would be easy to rewrite some of the lyrics and make the song age along with herself and her fans....

Yeah.. I'm almost positive she's going to keep singing it, without changing it, I was just thinking deeper into language differences. You can pretty much ignore my post.

It would be neat if she keeps on singing it.She isn't 20...so why wouldn't she sing about her being not 20.
Yes she is 20 now,but not after 21 August cause then she will be 21

She was sining the song last, short before her 20th Birthday
After it she sold her "J'ai pas vingt ans" costume
The life is for her a progress current, she was singing that her life would be changes when she's 20....
Now she's not more 20. Her life was changed!
I think she still sing it! Even when it's not true
But... it IS true... she was singing it, because she thought that she has a Family and a Man on her side with 20...

You're only twenty if you're twenty.
In about a month she could sing it again !?

In retrospect, with all the wonderful things happening in her life right now, I finally understood & came to the conclusion (for me anyway) that I'm Not Twenty was simply a countdown for motherhood (atleast now she can look at it that way).

Blah blah blah, age is nothing but a number.

Well said indeed my friend. My own youth has faded a bit, but I'm still ME! :D
By the way, how do you get Alizee pictures in your signature?

Thank you very much Snatcher! I'll work on it tomorrow. It's nearly 1 AM here and I need to get to bed so I can get up for work or else I'll end up in a "stage 8"
:D
Take care!

Heh, it's been 3 years since I learned that okay???
Keep in mind, she's not gonna change the words to Moi.. Lolita is she? That song will also be out of date with her current state during any future (or past even  ) concert.
If you want to get technical, she can sing it after her birthday all she wants. She's not twenty then anymore! Nobody said she has to be younger or older.

well, if you want to be even more technical, she is not 20 now. Your only really "20" for a second or so.. after that your 20 years, so many days, so many months ect, well passed 20 and 1/2.

Hmmmmmmmm, interesting techincal points. My question was really more about do you think there is room for the song to mature as Alizee does and also, do you think she might go that route. It was mostly just a silly question though. I don't expect that she'll stop singing it and I don't expect that she'll change it at all. I do belive it would work well if she did though.

If we are lucky She'll make a new song instead of changing the older ones, no?

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
I doubt she'll change it. It should reflect the time in which it was written. She's a little older now, but the song has remained the same, and I think she'll let it stay that way, and that's what I'd suggest if I were in a position to suggest anything to Alizee. It should be left as a part of her musical history, a snapshot of the things that happened in that particular point in time like photos taken of historic events.

I like that philosophy. Very well thought out indeed.
It's just like when Madonna sings "like a virgin", the song still goes over well with the crowd (I'm just guessing here because I really don't know or care for that matter) but she's as far from a virgin as any human being can get......
