well, 3 official languages....

Swedish, Finnish and English

but then there's the swedish slang I use too, where half the words are swedish and half finnish...this would probably not be that much understood if I would go to sweden and talk it :D

so 3 official, and 1 unofficial :P

also I had German in school, but I suck in it

To the people here who are learning or speaking French, can you read the old French part of the Oath of Strasbourg?

: Old High German: in godes minna ind in thes christanes folches ind unser bedhero gehaltnissi fon thesemo dage frammordes so fram so mir got geuuizci indi mahd furgibit so haldih thesan minan bruodher soso man mit rehtu sinan bruodher scal in thiu thaz er mig so sama duo indi mit ludheren in nohheiniu thing ne gegango the minan uillon imo ce scadhen uuerdhen

: Old French: Si Lodhuvigs sagrament que son fradre Karlo jurat conservat, et Karlus meos sendra de suo part non lostanit, si jo returnar non l'int pois, ne jo ne neuls cui eo returnar int pois, in nulla aiudha contra Lodhuuvig nun li iv er.

: Old High German: oba karl then eid then er sinemo bruodher ludhuuuige gesuor geleistit indi ludhuuuig min herro then er imo gesuor forbrihchit ob ih inan es iruuenden ne mag noh ih noh thero nohhein then ih es iruuenden mag uuidhar karle imo ce follusti ne uuirdhit

It was written by Charles the Bald and Louis the German when they pledged allegiance to each other against their brother, Lothar.

It is often mentioned as the first text in French as different of Latin. Sometimes, people also say it's the first text in a romance language that's different of Latin.

eLmo: For future reference, make the titles of your topics more descriptive so we know what the thread is about.

As Ludicrous said, the Oath of Strasbourg was the first document written in what would eventually become modern French, compared to the Latin variations being spoken up until that point in France. After two classes on medieval French, I became quite good at reading Old French, but it's been awhile since I looked at it. Besides the Oath of Strasbourg, I've read some of Marie de France's texts in Old French (actually the Anglo-Norman dialect), Villon's poetry (French from the later Middle Ages), and troubadour and trobaritz poetry (in the Provençal dialect which is closer to Spanish or Portuguese than modern French).

If you don't count those as separate languages, then I speak French and English with a little bit of Spanish. One of my university friends speaks the most languages of anyone I know: German, English, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, and Norwegian.

Polish, English, little French, little Russian.

Give me a try, here it goes:

For the love of God and for christian people and for our common salvation, to exist further, in which God saves and directs my dunat(?), if I save my brother Charles from cist(?), and in help and in ...blah blah... for the third brother... OK, enough of this nonsense :P

Asturian, Spanish and English, but I think I need to improve my English more :P

I can understand most words in the text written in old French and posted by Ludicrous. Actually, it is not very difficult to understand a language if it comes from Latin, when you speak a Romance language.

I can't speak them, but I almost fully understand to read it :P

loff
26th May 2005, 18:46
spaking; norwegian and english only.
reading/understanding: danish, swedish and some very simple written german. taking french next year, so i can probably add that to the list in 2006.

AlizéeInMYHeart, hvordan har det seg at du fårstår norsk? =) slektninger i norge/annen familie/venner i norge? morsomt å høre, ante ikke at det var andre her, bortsett fra svensker/dansker som forstår meg.

loff, I am "swedish".....I have lived all my life in Finland, but I belong to the 5% minority that has got swedish as their "main" language :D

so I find it quite easy to read norwegian, as it's pretty similar to swedish

so no relatives in norway, not that I know of....but I have a lot of norwegian friends over internet thx to gangsterhood, an online game, and they usually write in norwegian to me on Mirc...so I get my practice....oh, and I got a couple of norwegian TV channels that I watch regularly, so there I read the subtitles all day long too :P

Just English and French (although my French is by no means fluent - just good enough to get by...)

I hope to pick up more french - as my vocab/understanding/listening is vastly inferior to how it used to be. Then again, 10 years of not speaking/reading/writing it can have that affect. I could say that I speak German - after taking classes for 2 years... BUT - the test: Stick me in Germany, and I would have no hope of living without any aid/books etc. At least I can say with confidence that I could in France :)

(by the way, how many actually speak the languages you mention well enough to live unaided in that country? Cause I get the feeling some will mention languages as being 'spoken' by them, when they mean they know a handful of words only).

What gets me is how flippin excellent every other countries English is!

loff
26th May 2005, 21:05
english is the #1 language for international communication imo :) i think i could live unaided in england/the us/other similar english speaking country. atleast i could if writing was what you were doing. the way i pronounce words isn't exactly the best (well, actually it sucks big time :D), but it should be understandable.

how many languages do u speak?
Salut everybody!
Wo! I guess I have outnumbered you guyz out here. I am not tyring to blow my own trumpet. Well honestly, I am acquainted with 7 languages. Yo! That's right...But don't freak out. Out of them 4 are Indian Languages and 3 are foreign. You must be knowing that any Indian on an average can speak 2 languages, one is Hindi (Official Language) and the other is their mother tongue.
So here is my list:
--->Telugu (My mother tongue)
--->Hindi (National Language)
--->Urdu (This is the language mostly spoken by Muslims in India and this language is spoken by quite a few in my city)
---> Sanskrit (No doubt you must have heard about this language...All the prayers in my school were recited in Sanskrit and I have also taken up this language as a course in my high school)
--->English (Do I know English????)
---> Farsi ('Coz I have stayed in Iran for 11 years)
--->German (a lil' bit...my neighbours were Germans)

phew! There's my list. Now I am trying to learn Spanish. I can speak a few phrases. But you know what, I can't speak a word of French. I wish I could. I am so eager to learn this language. But I have no clue if it will ever chance me to learn French. Despite all these, I am a DIE HARD FAN OF OUR BELOVED ALIZEE...ha ha! But anyways, I am looking forward to befriend any French who knows a bit of English and is a fan of Alizee.
So, Au Revoir Guyz!

Ha Ha! Danke! But the fact is that I am a South Indian. Telugu is spoken in a state in South India (Andhra Pradesh). Right now, I am studying in a University (IIT- Kharagpur) which is in West Bengal, Eastern Part of India. But you know what, I have never ever ventured to know atleast a few words of Bengali :-(

Piece Of Paradise

But if you are in West Bengal, don't the people speak Bengali?

blueslover
29th May 2005, 09:29
I am confused, isn't Tamil spoken in South India?

But if you are in West Bengal, don't the people speak Bengali?

Well, you must be knowing that there are 5 native South Indian Languages:
http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~malaiya/scripts.html
1. Tamil (your fav  )
2. Telugu
3. Kannada
4. Malayalam
5. Sanskrit

The first four of them come into a category of languages which is popularly known as "Dravidian Languages".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dravidian_languages

Ya, I am staying in West Bengal, but I never felt the need to talk in Bengali. There are students from all over the country. So, mostly I manage with Hindi and English as well, as long as I am in the University. But yea, everyone can speak Hindi, so that isn't a big deal as such.

Breton French? It's not exactly a dialect, it's a Celtic language and is very different of French. If you can understand it then you're very good because I can't (and my mother is Breton), it might be interesting to learn though, as Britons and Cornish are now dead languages it might be the closest language at the moment of the one that Arthur, Lancelot, Galahad and the gang spoke.

Mandarin Chinese is most spoken I think....

Correct...i was looking up to a file where says how many people have spoken which language!

But this shocked me...

http://www.educ.state.ak.us/tls/frameworks/wrldlang/image8.gif

It's about American classes,in 1996 and about the world there

Here you can see World Language

http://www.mapsofworld.com/images/world-languages-map.gif

It's to big to post. But We,Netherlands and Belgium, don't belong to German Language

We have a slight difference between German and Dutch language

And this.........

What can i say about it.............

It has nothing to do with languages........but with this forum....

geeze, you Europeans speak so many languages, i feel like a dumb american

I'm learning spanish right now. I live in Arizona, which is right on top of mexico, so i get to practice daily at my highschool. There's a ton of kids here that cannot speak a word of english, so i try to converse with them with my little spanish. Like today in my computer class, this girl was so confused and had never seen a computer before. I helped her log on and get on the internet, and she showed me a map of Honduras and her hometown, and we had this weird conversation, which consisted of my amatuer spanish and her nodding or shaking her head

I eventually want to learn spanish and french, i wanna think in English, pray in spanish, and listen to Alizée in French :cheesy:

Finnish - Fluent
English - Not too bad?

Swedish - Well... I passed the Swedish classes at high school... with lowest possible grades. :P
Japanese - Started studying this recently. Can read and write katakanas/hiraganas (not kanjis). And of course can speak some.
French - Well... I haven't had time to study this yet but I have learned to read it. Can understand small texts, altho, don't know many words yet. Understand basic grammar. Can't write nor speak.

Norwegian - Understand it as much as Swedish.. So very little. Friends lived there some years so I heard it time to time.
Estonian - Well... As this is very close to Finnish, I can understand it somewhat. But problem is words that looks similar as in Finnish but doesn't mean same thing.

Yes never mess with a Moderator... in case of RMJ you get lucky if he doesn't smack you hard with comments.

I'll pray for you. I hope you will return from the death. But i won't help you

Black Star, that would be great. I have studied Spanish, French, and German in school. Spanish I can speak well since I lived in Mexico for a year. French I speak a little, I'm better at reading it, and German I forgot a lot since I took that language when I was in primary school. I have always wanted to learn a lot of languages since I travel a lot. I always try to learn the basics before going to a certain country like Greek when I was there in 2005 and Italian when I was in Italy in 2004. I think that is the least a tourist should do before visiting another country to be able to at least say hello, thank you, and so on.

In England, when I went to school (8 years ago) it was compulsory to study and take a GCSE exam in at least 1 foreign language which was usually French. But now it isn't as brother who is at high school now has dropped all foreign languages.

I feel this is wrong and just highlights how ignorant us english can be.
