View Full Version : The landmarks and travel thread

Since some folks started to talk about it in another thread. Here is a thread on the topic.
So where do you guys travelled, what kind of landmarks did you like ect......
I like the gothic churchs a lot, even though I won't say I'm religious, I often like the details of the buildings.
As I said, in England you must visit the Lincoln Cathedral. I'll visit it soon, I can't wait.
Picture taken by a friend from an architecture forum, you can enjoy his website:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/35/384_pic28.jpg
It used to be 160m tall but the main spire collapsed, it also had two spires if front of it of the size of Salisbury's main spire. They were removed too.
The most impressive are the two transcepts, and I think it looks cooler without spires, better in proportions.
I've been in several places, recently (2004) it was in Barcelona, Zaragoza, Prague, Budapest, Dijon. If you are interested in pictures or details just ask.
EDIT: I forgot to say that now it's 80m tall, you must imagine the spire doubled its size. Which is why I think it's better proportioned without.

It's the Hautes-Pyrénées department. In the southwestern France, it's between Toulouse and Pau if you know those a bit. It joined France only after the first republic, before that it was always apart, from the Kingdom of the Visigoths (or Kingdom of Toulouse) to the Kingdom of Navarre.

@Benficabeatsporto.
If you live in England, you'll find the housing are much cheaper here. You can get middle sized villas for something like 300.000€. The only problem is: mieux vaut apprendre le Français.

Well, for employment it depends. In Hautes Pyrenees, it's not that easy. Only 2 cities can argue having a real economy, Tarbes & Lourdes. There are bigger cities outside Hautes Pyrénées like Pau and Toulouse with a dynamic economy but they are also much more populated (especially Toulouse) and industrialised.

In normandy and brittany most of the people speak English anyway. Lots of brits moved over there and it is the hotspot for british to live. In Normandy you can even get all British tv and i don't know alot about jobs, but lots of my friends i work with live in Normandy and they claim jobs arnt that much of a problem.
Although, its only a small trip through the tunnel back to England, a few hours.. so you can work in UK.. and live in France lol that, or the ferry.

I don't think I would live in Brittany or Normandy. I got families in Caen and Vannes but I prefer Burgundy (also have family in Dijon) and Gascony. They have a better quality of life IMO. I wouldn't be so confident about the English skills of the Bretons and Normans than you.
The cool thing in Normandy is the Rouen Cathedral, the Saint Michel Mount (although it was Breton before) and the camembert. Brittany doesn't really appeal me.

I have only ever really been around Paris (which I loved immensely!) and Orleans as well. Stayed soooo many times in a little town called Pithiviers, which was a good (although quiet) place. Been towards the south of France - Perpignion - at Saint Marie Plage I think it was called. Really enjoyed the south of France, but the whole of France has some awesome architecture - the buildings are fantastic. Very laid back, very friendly. Has England beaten in many categories imo, although that could just be the 'tourist' part of me speaking
However, since I cannot find any pictures (or even a scanner to scan them in with) - I will have to apologise for the thread hijacking. Hope to see more great pics :)

I don't really care if the thread is hijacked, not that it's very valuable.
As dumb as it might sound, I haven't been in Paris (lol, to take the plane but that doesn't count), though I've done London.
Well, if you want pictures, I can post huge amounts of them since I still have the pictures I took in 2004 (more than 1000). I lost those of the USA and England (was a long time ago).

Fantastic pics again, thanks alot. I liked all of them! One of the best laws i like about France is that, you can not have a clear glass window looking onto another buildings window. Very private.. i like privacy.
Here are some photos from Rosslyn. The chapel/Temple was built in 1400's by Sir William St.Clair, Prince of Orkany.. Knights templar. Carved by freemasons by hand. I have been here around 20 times, each time more better than before. Ofc, the history of this place is amazing, dating back that the chapel has the exact same ground plans as the temple of soloman, identical with the fanous two pillars at the entrance. It also comes with the myth, that it was the only temple that was not destroyed under the order, as it contained the treasures that were excavated from Jerusalem during the crusades, that are buried below the vaults of this amazing and stunng building.
So much mystery and History to this place. People visit it from all over the world, its not far from me.. 40 minutes drive. Sorry for huge pics..

Nah, the best law in France is that it's illegal to name his pig after Napoleon.
Best English law, it's illegal to enter the houses of parliament with a full suit of armor.

OMG, this thread is awesome! I took about 3400 pictures when I went to Europe. I'd like to share but I'm way too lazy these days. Nice pics though everyone. Seeing these pictures makes me want to travel more. I'd say there is about a 50% chance that I can study in France next year. That would be sweet.

They're parked, what does it look like? Actually we ended up in Amsterdam on the day they had the gay pride parade in the canals so this is one of the few good shots we could take.
This is Prague and there is nobody in this car:

Yeah I wish I could have! Unfortunately that would have been 8 more pounds to lug around on my back. More pics of Wensleydale:
http://students.washington.edu/kuesterj/Data/Europe/Wensleydale2.jpg
And this one, which we walked 20 miles to and from the train station to see. The bridge here is the Bain Bridge which named the town around it Bainbridge. Eventually this surname was passed down to Captain William Bainbridge of the US Navy. Bainbridge Island across from Seattle, where I grew up, was later named after Commodore Bainbridge. Therefore, going there was like returning to our roots.

Well in Amsterdam it goes canal, parked boats, parked cars, street for each direction. You stay on the right side of everything! And another set of great pics!

I lived for two years in East Africa - Tanzania. We were in driving distance from all the famous game parks shown on TV. We stopped once to look at a rhino. It turned to stare at us and started running towards us. I was yelling at the driver (another teacher) encouraging her to get out of there fast. She did. Another time a bull elephant turned to face us and trumpeted. We got the message and left quickly. We saw the same family group later that day but we were much further away. He just turned to look at us, but didn't look threatening. Whew!!
I climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro twice - beautiful view from that high up. I'll get a few pictures to post.
The worst time we had was in London. Bad food, until we found an Indian restaurant. We saw pigeon poop square (I mean Trafalger Square) and a few other places. I liked Africa and India because they were very different fromt he US.
France was probably beautiful, but from the air at night it was hard to tell.

Normally it's forbidden in churches and cathedrals. Maybe without flash, okay. :P

20th March 2005, 13:17
Normally it's not allowed.
For Auch, Toulouse and Saint Bertrand I was authorised. Especially in Auch and Saint Bertrand, everybody knows everyone.
In Zaragoza, a priest allowed me and a guard didn't. Basicly, since they were contradicting themselves I took more than 100 pictures.
For Budapest, I made a donation for the church renovation, so I took a few pictures in return.

Of course, London has to be on the 'map' for you - several days at least - visit the tourist stuff, and then "enjoy" the city itself. Personally, this country doesn't have its own definate culture anymore, so the history is probabily its best feature, instead of soaking up the 'atmosphere' (a la Rio!)

It depends what you consider close of far. It's more the Toulouse/Montpellier area than Marseille. West of Marseille.
http://www.thelivefrancegroup.com/images/afp/france-aude-map.gif
Basicly, if you go west of Marseille, in the area that is formerly known as the County of Toulouse, you'll see tons of interesting stuff.
Carcassonne of course. In Toulouse proper there is the Saint Sernin Basilica which is almost untouched since 1070 and was the siege of the Inquisition being among the largest Romanesque Church. The Capitol was also widely rebuilt in the 18th century but it was originaly built in the 9th century.
In Nimes and around, the Pont du Gard is a Roman Aqueduct, the Maison Carrée is a roman temple, and the arenas are also Roman.
Narbonne Cathedral has France 2nd tallest choir (and the French choir are often the tallest).
Albi has a fine cathedral too.
Millau has the world tallest bridge.
Further west you have crazy landscapes (in Gascony) but it's getting quiet afar from Marseille.
