Haven't heard em all, but the ones I have...
CALOGERO : en apesanteur, face a la mer........
Only heard those two songs, but both are great... esp. face a la mer with Passi.
LORIE : a 20 ans, weekend......
Blech!
PASCAL OBISPO : mourrir demain, FAN, LUCIE......
These songs you mention are good (esp. mourir demain with Natasha St. Pier - GREAT), but the rest are kinda "blah."
I'll check out the others.

I really like "dernière danse" by KYO. I can't stop listening to it. It's the only song I really like from them.
"Le chemin" is not bad either.

Pretty much all the US fans know about her from the internet, since she's never done any promotion in the US. Perhaps it's just us Americans being out of ordinary, but I find it amusing when the French are surprised there are fans outside of France. Same thing happened in January when I got to meet some of them. 8)
As for all those singers, the only ones I'm really familiar with are Obispo and Lorie. Lorie I don't like that much, but I do listen to Obispo from time to time. In addition to those songs you listed, I also like Pas besoin de regret and Zinedine. Daniel Levy's L'envie d'aimer is also good, which Obispo wrote.
David Charvet's (yes, from Baywatch!) Jusqu'au bout is too boy bandish-ish... not my style. I listened to some Kyo too, but it seemed a little bland although Le chemin was all right.
Priscilla... she's a guilty pleasure I listen to on occasion. Her songs are a bit too childish though, as is her voice, but they can be fun as long as you don't listen to them too often.

It is obvious there is a huge variety of different artists in France. Some make good music, some don't. Some have the talent to stand out from the crowd. The others don't. When living in France, I am sure one can hear loads and loads of them. And probably everyone will find themselves an artist they like more than some other. However, it can happen, that when surrounded by so many French artists, the French themselves will miss some very talented ones. Why? Because it is difficult to notice certain good singers, when there are so many others aswell. But what is the point of my blabbering? My point is - people in France are not giving Alizée enough credit. Maybe they are too used to Her. Maybe most singers are covering up Her songs, so that people won't notice them. Whatever the reason is, it's a shame that it is happening.
Which brings me to my next point. Alizée is one of the very few with an international carreer. I have heard some French artists's names. I have maybe seen their picture and can connect the name with their image. Maybe I have heard a couple of their songs. And yet, all of those other singers have had little to no effect on me. They are not appealing to me. Alizée is the one, who has breached the international barriers and has spread French music all over the world. And yes, it is sad for me to hear that She has not been given enough credit on Her homeland.
I wanted to add one of my usual "what-is-wrong-with-you-people?" comment to the end of my post. But I won't do it. Instead I'm just rolling my eyes, when seeing another person commenting on Alizée in such way as some have in this thread.

Ooo, I disagree... maybe she gets that reputation in France (and it's a real shame if she does), but most of her songs use a "childish" veneer (surface appearance) to hide deep meanings. Some are downright subversive (This is Mylene Farmer's writings we're talking about). J'en ai marre especially! Wow, that's my favorite in this regard because yes, it SEEMS childish if you don't pay attention... but look into the lyrics and images, and there are multiple meanings everywhere... maybe Mylene was too cryptic on MCE and hid these meanings too well... so that the general public just sees them as childish songs and writes Alizée off as that... pity, their loss.

lol...I guess you don't realize too much who Alizee is....She's just a pop idole. I gave you some exemple. This is from the french tendencies (fashion). Before we had the "boys bands", then came the "lolita" and after that "musical comedy" etc.....
I saw a documentary about lolita's tendancie...ans esp. Alizee. This concept as been create to tease and exite people lol. As you said, there'is a message behind her lyrics...it want to make you believe it's childlish, but it's almost hot. Mix between cute and sexy. No need to check more deep, If french was your native language, You 'll think anoter way...believe me... :D
First time I heard Alizee, I was sure Mylene farmer was behind...It's pure mylene style. (I talk about music). Mylene is doing the job, Alizee is just acting....her charisma is her only power. Dont say she's a great singer because it's not true. Her songs are the most easy to sing even for amateur.
I respect fully you like Alizee, she have talent and charisma....But she's only a pop idol, this kind of singer is good enough for work 1 or 2 years but not for a long time

Cejin, what happened to all of your literature classes? If there's even a hint of a deeper meaning in a text in French, someone's going to analyze it. Especially if you're used to Mylène, for crying out loud. :P
I respect fully you like Alizee, she have talent and charisma....But she's only a pop idol, this kind of singer is good enough for work 1 or 2 years but not for a long time
By my count, she's been around for 5 years now (OK, 4 if you don't count Graines de star).
So all those people in the music industry, on T.V., in the interviews, etc, who said she'd be around for a long time (including good ol' Pascal N.) were just pulling our legs?
By the way, I've seen the lolita documentary too. If anything, it told me that Alizée's style is going to have to evolve if she wants to stick around. From what I can tell, she's already started working on that. At this point, she has plenty of people who would support her musically. I'm not saying we should expect Gourmandise-like sales again. But if she stops singing, it'll be her own choice.

I agree with BIB... Mylène would not be interested in producing merely a pop-queen with limited life span in the interest of record sales. Not to dismiss money as unimportant (because I'm sure it was), but I believe Mylène has higher artistic standards. That's part of what separates Alizée from the other Lolitas (not even a good word for her anymore) - she's the real deal: a protégée, not a pawn. Mylène probably sees Lili as her successor, so why shouldn't we?

I don't understand why the fact that Natasha isn't French is important. She sings in French. If she is Canadian and sings in French isn't she a French artist? I heard that the French don't think Canadians speak real French. Snobbery.
I'd like some opinions on Lara Fabian, Helene Segara, and Francois Sandrine. I learned about them on Amazon.com while looking for Natasha, Jenifer, and Alizée CDs to see if there was anything new. The Amazon.com site doesn't have song samples for French singers. Maybe I should try Amazon.fr, but sometimes I get lost there. (My French is minimal.)

A French artist is generally understood to be an artist who is from France.
Canadian French isn't spoken like standard French, so in that sense it's not real French. Some French people have a real hard time understanding Quebeckan French...

I think it's more important which industry you work in. Mylene Farmer is French-Canadian as well, yet is considered a "French" artist because that's where she does most of her business. I'm sure the same applies for Natasha.

I'd like some opinions on Lara Fabian, Helene Segara, and Francois Sandrine.
I'm a pretty big fan of Hélène Ségara. I guess her music could be described as mainstream pop for a more mature audience, but I absolutely love it. She's got a really beautiful voice, in my opinion, and some nice songs to go with it. I wouldn't say there's really anything outstanding about her music, but for some reason I really like it. It's hard to describe, so it'd probably be better to just listen to some samples for yourself. Here's a link to her CD's on Amazon.fr (http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/402-2645173-0300966). Her albums in order are Coeur de verre, Au nom d'une femme, En concert à L'Olympia, Hélène (Spanish versions of her hits), and Humaine. She also has a new Best of album which just came out, which may be a good choice to buy, since it has 3 new songs on it. I'm probably going to buy it myselt too.

The fact that Natasha st p. isn't french is important in that case : She's pretty good singer, and it's arrogant to me to say she's french...because she's not. Franckly, we consider them (natasha, Lara fabian or celine dion as french)...but I was wondering if you knew their real origine. it's not snobbery  Just for information.
Robbie william sing in english...however, he's not an american singer, he's from UK. Actually, we have a lot of canadian singer and they're great.
To answer your question, Quebec peoples speack french with a different accent...but when they sing, there is no difference.
helene segara is pretty good. her most famous song " y a trop de gens qui t'aimes". But her style is pretty boring :D
Lara fabian is a great vocalist as Celine dion. When she started, many people think she Copy Celine. Now she have her own style. I recommend you these songs " Immortelle" - "je t'aime" "Tout" - "Bambina" (she take a children voice in this song.)

Just one thing about Alizee lyrics....i'm not surprise We don't have the same feelings when listen her song. This is my native language and I know EXACTLY what it mean. For exemple, I said I love Kamelot. but It's more easy to appreciate it in english. Try to translate it in french, and I couldn't support these lyric. It talk about king and warriors, it's funny for a french if it would sing in french. But in English, I cant explain why, The sound is better to us. And it's one of my favorite band !!

Ah don't worry - Kamelot's lyrics are silly in English too! :)
We got plenty of native French speakers on this forum who share my opinion on Alizée's lyrics, so I don't think it's so much a language thing as it's just a matter of taste. Even if you take them at their most mundane, I can't see how anyone can compare them to say Lorie or Britney Spears lyrics.

Obispo : my God. I can't bear this man. So pretentious... and his songs are stupid. His last try to be rock is so ridiculous !
Badi : as for Amiel.
Lévy : Obispo, still and then... It's not music, it's mash mallow !
Denzey : so ridiculous...
I'm from France
The artists I like : Noir Désir (a big band of rock music), Raphaël, Jean-Louis Aubert and Téléphone, Mylène Farmer of course, Renaud, Indochine, ...
