I saw this earlier and laughed. It just served as a contrast to Alizee in my mind. Ashlee Simpson, talentless, manufactured pop-singer riding her sister's (not much better) coattails to fame. Lip synching, and trying that...I don't know what kind of dance that was. I thought drunken Irish jig meets hillbilly jamboree. Compare this to the more elegant, graceful choreography of Alizee and her voice and...yikes. The scales are broken.

Alizée lip-syncs nearly all her performances... the exceptions being her tour and the stuff on the live CD/DVD, of course, plus these videos:

You can also hear her real singing voice a bit in SAD 2003 (when she enters the store), and on Moi Lolita Live In Amsterdam (2001-04-30) and JEAM Deutschland Champions (2003-07-12) - where her real voice can be heard for a moment ontop of the canned audio.

So yes, the thing with Ashlee Simpson is funny, but bvmjethead was absolutely right in his statement about these things. This is how nearly all European artists work, and it's becoming more and more common in the United States as well...

The reason Milli Vanilli was such a big controversy was because they were not even lip-syncing to their own voices! ;)

Nearly all. It has been mentioned loads of times in the boards already, and if you would do a search for it, I'm sure you'd find many topics where the same discussion has been held.
However, like snatcher said, not all performances are lipsynced. (Europe TV tradition)
And concerts are 100% live - this is what matters.
