He ya! Just wanted to ask if there are any vegans or vegetarians in the house 'coz that'll be my New Year's resolution. If so, please tell me how you switched from being a meat-lover to a veggie fiend 'coz as far as I know it ain't that easy :x . What were your reasons? How long have you been a vegetarian/vegan? Lemme guess, by now you have an acne-free flawless complexion(not that I'm pimply or anything) :D ? please gimme some good ole tips to succesfully cross the greener side 'coz I know pork isn't the answer.

Start by switching to seafood and vegetables. Then eventually switch to vegetables.

Sea foods. Hmm...I'm alergic to shrimp so guess I'll hafta exclude that. Do you overcook your vegetables? I heard of a vegan sausage...pretty unlikely as I've never eaten any. How long have u been a vegetarian?
banishedbayou
19th October 2004, 20:52
I don't overcook them.
Two years.

Two years! Wow! wish I could do that. what made you switch? So basically you're losing weight right? And what have you noticed now (physically) as a vegetarian and before u became one?

Yes
I feel more energetic but that may just be psychological.

No physical changes like your eyes brighter, your skin more radiant and supple, your iummune system stronger...none of those?
banishedbayou
19th October 2004, 21:05
I don't really pay attention to my skin other than slapping some lotion on it. My immune system has always been strong so I don't notice any difference. My eyes aren't brighter.

The human body has trouble digesting the cellular walls of plants. I have experienced no intestinal problems though.

19th October 2004, 23:31
As far as the choice between vegan and vegitarian, I would choose vegitarian. Many vegans will point out to you that raw vegitables have more vitamins. I do not deny this. As I pointed out in my previous post:
The human body has trouble digesting the cellular walls of plants
This makes it more difficult for the human digestive system to access the vitamins in the plant. When vegetables are cooked it does strip away vitamins from the plant, but the cellular walls are partially broken down which gives you access to more vitamins.

yes, I've heard of the raw food diet. some damn healthy people swear by it. Unfortunately I can't give up fish, so I'll opt for vegetarian over being a vegan. It's still an ardous task. the aroma of fried pork/beef/poultry is hard to resist.

Lol. Do you have occasional relapses? I admire your perseverance and dedication for staying a veggie. One wonders  :?: how you handle it especially on holidays such as thanksgiving and christmas. With all that turkey and ham and yams....mmmm. I might have to postpone this year 'coz the holidays are comin.

Wow! I can't handle the thought of depriving myself from all that ham and turkey. The thought seems too unbearable. the good thing is atleast you don't hafta worry about shedding those holiday pounds. So what do you eat on those occasions 'coz its mainly porky and poultry during the holidays. My tummy feels like acid if i don't eat any meat.

I haven't eaten meat (including fish - they are animals, duh!), eggs, or dairy in many (>10?) years. Don't miss it. I feel great. The only time I slip is when I must have chocolate cake (eggs) or pizza (dairy) when we are out to eat. If you must start out slowly, start with fake meat that tastes like meat. I have interesting meals that taste great. You will be able to find vegan or vegetarian dishes in almost any ethnic group of foods. To start with, go vegetarian and then slowly vegan. I'm about 90% vegan and 100% vegetarian.
Never heard of intestinal problems - new one to me. Vegetarians have very low cholesterol.
Why is protein always mentioned? I get plenty. Even rice and potatoes have protein.
Thai, Chinese, Italian, Indian, Spanish, Mexican, great Ethiopian curry - many good foods from all over the world. Eating vegetarian in Alaska or Siberia might be a problem.
I became vegetarian because I came to realize that animals are treated horribly for their products and we have no reason to kill them. I can go to almost any restaurant with people and eat fine.
Do it!

Wow!! So you've just started when you were 17 as well. That is so cool! And ten years later...what have you noticed physically (glowy skin, well built) and mentally (not so mood-swingish according to Moby)?
As for the fake meat...I dunno what the hell that is or where to find it but I'm guessing it's a heavily flavored tofu (or i could b wrong)? Damn! It's stormy out here in Southern Cali! It's a good thing we have an organic food store just near by.
So my plan is (tell me if this is a good plan) to start on oatmeal with soy milk for breakfast, coz I heard it's good for your intestines. from now on, nibble on carrots instead of Dorritos incase hunger strikes. My reason why I want to switch is becasue I've noticed vegans and veggies are more healthier than meat eaters. And if u guys have been flippin your channels...you probably might have caught a segment with this female doctor (Author of the book: Cancer Doesn't Scare me Anymore) who had some type of cancer where there was this nasty lump growing in between her chest, and she was bedridden, and she was hopeless as is expected of those severely suffering from cancer. But then she changed her eating habits and began to intake massive amounts of organic food, fruits and beggies and she swore off meat (except for fish) for life. Her lump shrunk until it was completely, thus curing her from her ailment. can you believe that? instead of chemo....organic diet cured her of cancer! And this other doctor too said there was an organic-related cure that orthodox doctors are keeping mum about. Coz you know how it is with herpes (not that i have one) medications, and anti-depressants. They just keep increasing your dosage and repressing the symptoms but never actually eliminating the illnesss itself.

yes the animals are treated horribly and the small farms are getting taken over by the big factorys, but u dont have to become a vegan or vegitarian to make a difference. just start buying meat from local farms they kill the animals in a MUCH less painfull way...... i eat meat all the time, i dont think i could ever become a vegan/vegitarian

Oh hell no! Vegans do not die early at all. There were a group of villagers in Africa (I saw this on the national geographic channel) who lived long lives because they were vegans and strengthened their immune systems and slowed down their again process. at death turning orange, now that's gross.

A juicy steak. Country fried chicken. Veal...Some of the reasons why I will never be a vegetarian. I don't know how you vegans do it. I will never understand it quite frankly. Animals were put on this earth to serve us. We must eat them! To each his own I guess.

Fake protein takes many forms - texturized wheat protein, soy protein, rice cheese, garbonzo (falafal) flour, ...
Real protein (not pretending to be something else) - lentils, dahl, beans, rice, wheat, ...
Fruits are good for anyone and good tasting as well.
Local health food stores will have many choices. There are stores around here that look more like supermarkets that have large sections of vegetarian friendly food.
(I hope this doesn't turn you off, but I like my occasional bag of Doritoes.)
Veal is disgusting even for a carnivore. It is produced by keeping a newborn calf confined to a stall barely bigger then their body, feeding it on an iron poor diet (to keep the meat pale), and to keep their muscles from developing any firmness.
Animals kept for meat are treated terribly. Primitive peoples used every part of an animal. Today much is wasted - very disrespectful.
If I can do it right, there will be pictures of some of my meals here.
How do I post pictures??[/url]

I am a semi-vegetarian which means that i don't eat red meat. One day i would love to be a complete veggie.... but my mom doesn't want me to give chicken up....
I gave up beef, veal, lamb because, ahem... i like those animals running around in the fields playing (what a lame excuse) and i saw how a hen was killed on a tv show (that'll teach them) which showed how a chicken was killed WHICH REALLY UPSET ME & has really inspired me to be a complete veggie when i move out of my parents home....
Hav u ever tried "quorn"? That is REALLY nice and they do burgers, steaks, indian, bacon, ... all without meat and low in fat!!!! it's really easy as there r loadsa brands that do vegetarian meals now which tastes really good!
good luck!!!

no.... animals are innocent and cute..... they shouldn't be killed for us to eat... i'd prefer to eat brocolli soup than steak baguette... eauw (the meat... not the bread...)
i'd still hav proper milk as i hate soya milk and eggs as it doesn't harm the animals... but to kill an animal in a cruel way is just not right....

Well first, may I ask what veal is? I've never heard or eaten such a thing. Secondly, my dad informed me that he just saw in the news that pigs that are bred for us to eat are fed with these types of food that have hormones that can advance growth in the creatures and people who eat this piggies are affected too, resulting in premature puberty (early breast growth and pubic apparitions). That is so scary. All the more reason to really become a veggie.
edit: I tried the humus (chick pea) recipe. placed it in a bowl of water overnight, the next morning, it smelled like dump.

O my goodness! I just had another relapse. I ate 2 pieces of bacon. There has got to be a herbal chewable thingy that lessens your apetite.
Edit: The doctor I told u about recently argued that going vegan would increase your immune system. She states: "Why do you think our ancestors never had any skin cancers from walking naked under the sun? It's because they were herbivores and they ate their fruits and veggies raw". Interesting.

Don't believe anyone who uses "all" "always" , etc. no matter which side they are on. Going vegetarian for ethical reasons is personal choice.
There are, however, good reasons for going vegetarian even if you don't believe in it ethically. It takes 10 - 17 times as much vegetation to make meat. An animal must eat great amounts of usable protein to make meat. (At least here in the US. Animals are fed soybeans, corn, wheat, ...) Growing meat is a very inefficient use of land. Animal products have cholesterol, plant products don't. (Animals make cholesterol from plants.) My cholesterol levels are at a very healthy level. When I tell the reporting doctor that I am vegetarian, they usually say that they are not surprised to find that my blood is so healthy.
The bit about animals being given to us for meat is a religious conclusion and is out of date anyway. We can feed more people better without eating meat. Eating meat means more people will go without food since it is so inefficient. God (in the Judeo/Christian Bible) gave man the fruit or trees and the ground to eat until man crossed god and then were given animals to eat. To me it sounded like, "If you are going to be so bad, go ahead and eat meat."
Animal products are bad for your health and bad for the health of the planet as a place for people to survive.
Just my informed and very intelligent opinion. God, however, didn't talk to me. :P

I'm impressed with people who can go totally vegetarian/vegan/whatever, it should be much more energy efficient. Personally, I love meat too much to give it up, though I balance it with plenty of crops. My friend has been a vegetarian for two or three years, and she's got digestive problems, but I think those might have been present before.

Also. I have been in animal rights groups with people who have been vegetarians for decades. Some people say vegetarians fart more, but you don't have to get your protein from fart-causing beans.
Research the Internet, but be very aware of who is publishing the information. Some health food organizations are pill pushers (many large doses of vitamins, minerals, etc.). Some vegetarian and vegan groups will tell you fantastic stories of health, vigor, whatever. If the claims are far out, they are probably false. Low cholesterol and some results are real.
Also, don't try to convert others too enthusiastically. You will lose friends and you must live with and around carnivores.
Some carnivores are even good people. :D 8)

Oh my! I hope there isn't a single grain of truth in that. Well I'm very pissed today because supposedly this would've been my 1st day as a veggie, but my dad was making breakfast with eggs and bacon and the aroma was too mighty to withstand, and once more I fell to the dark said and ate them hearty fatty breakfast. I was wondering how many relapses you've experienced since initially becoming a veggie because I feel so down and I wonder if it's a normal process to occasionally relapse towards becoming a veggie.

It is very difficult to be or become vegetarian if your parents don't help.
I ate a meat pizza once when a girlfriend served it because I thought I should get to know her and then tell her I was vegetarian. It didn't work out. She also smoked - yuk! After you haven't eaten meat for awhile it will not even tempt you. I can't stand the smell of meat and have no desire to eat it.
My wife wanted to be vegetarian but all her boyfriends weren't, until me. So it worked out well. She became vegetarian "cold turkey" because the last meat she ate was a turkey sandwich on Thanksgiving day :!:

You'll probably get sick trying to switch from "Meat Lover" to "Vegetarian". I know some people who tried to do it and they got really sick and had to go back to eating meat. It's hard to just become a vegetarian if your body can't adjust to it. If you were vegetarian since you were born or didn't eat much meat as a kid then it'll be much easier.

Ugh! I hate it when people smoke. I hope your wife doesn't smoke. Yes it is true that switching from meat to veggie is undeniably a difficult task. My tummy always feels acidish, and it's hard enough when my parents cook these heart fatty meals. I have failed a 2nd time in my attempt to convert. The bacon and eggs...oh my god I wish I could just brush them off. I desperately want to switch coz when you get full from eating meat and fatty foods, it's such a heavy and sluggish feeling after that; whereas, if you get full from veging out, it ain't that bad. How long has your wife been a veggie? What do you have in your fridge. my salads are freezing up.

I'm trying to become vegetarian as well... I'm only about 80% percent right now because it’s hard to switch from meat cold turkey (no punn intended) I eat a vegetarian diet from Monday - Friday... and On Saturday and Sunday I eat meat occassionally! I think a vegetarian diet is healthier for you because the meat in the American food system is filled with steroids, growth hormone, antibiotics, etc... All that crap gets into the human body after eating the meat from those scientific food experiment animals! In my opinion the contaminated meat with all those hormones have caused Girls to go into puberty a lot younger in age then ever before!
I read this book I bought on Amazon.com called "Your Right to Be Beautiful: How to Halt the Train of Aging and Meet the Most Beautiful You". It’s all about the raw food lifestyle and how it helps your health and skin. I suggest you guys check it out at your local library!

I have never heard of someone getting sick when changing from being an omnivore to being an herbivore. No one I know who is vegetarian has experienced that.
The main problem with going from omnivore to herbivore is caused when people try to eat the same diet they are used to without the meat. You can't change a meat-centered diet to a vegetarian diet by just eliminating meat.

be careful man, being vegan is not easy. In some instances great numbers of animals are pulverized by combines in the harvesting of your veggies, this point is pointed out on some other websites, i am too lazy to post them.
Remember, everything and everyone kills animals, even when they don't mean to. Wether that is good or bad, i do not know.

Nah, almost never. You Europeans are so much more into McDonald's than we are. In Toledo, Spain I saw one that had two stories and the plaza packed with people eating that crap. It's basically looked down upon here, though people still do eat it. I do not try to eat healthily, but I'm just too cheap to buy candy and chips and stuff like that.

loveherfromusa what are you and your wife having for Thanksgiving Day? Oh and my attempt to convert as a vegan...will be my New Year's resolution instead. The holidays are approaching and this'll be my last meat feasting.
I make a great tofu spinach lasagne. Don't listen to people who dis tofu. It is a source of protein. It has very little taste. The lasagne tastes great because of the sauce, garlic, etc. Meat is totally unnecessary to your health. I have great blood pressure numbers and cholesterol numbers.
Good luck with your abstinence. There are worse activities to abstain from. :P

When you and your wife cook vegan recipes... do you add oil/ or some kind of oil or do you just leave everything medium rare? Coz oil tends to be fatty right...and that's a no-no in veggies.

It will take awhile to get these together for you. I'll post some pictures of meals. The taco salad we make is great. I make Italian, Indian, Thai, Mexican, etc. One of our favorite recipes is look-in-the-refrigerator-and-on-the-shelves-and-make-up-something. I took a class on Italian vegetarian cooking and one on Indian cooking. The class on Indian cooking was great. Each of us paid $10 and we sat at a kitchen island where we helped prepare the food, then we ate it. The meal itself was worth more than $10. I can make an Indian meal with several couses, but it takes a few hours. A neighbor who had one of my Indian meals said it was better than what he tasted in India!! I also have a quick version that is much less involved, but not as tasty.

If you can't take the heat ....
The only time I had Indian food that was too hot was in Vancouver. I asked for the hottest they had. I was used to the hot that is served in the US. The Canadian Indian food was more authentic. Half way through the meal, the waiter came by and asked how I was doing. I said I was taking a rest and that next time I would ask for medium hot.

Thai food uses peanut butter sauces. Curry is a generic term for many different spice combinations. I make different curry spice combinations for different dishes. Curry always has turmeric; it's what makes it and your fingers yellow. I make a potato, cauliflower, and pea curry that has the most common curry spices in it. I also make an orange, banana, raisin, almond curry that has some different spices in it and eliminates some of the spices in the other curry. If you want more information, I can get a list of different curry spices for each dish. Curry can include turmeric, coriander, cumin, mustard, cayenne, cardamon, garlic powder, fenugreek, anise, cinnamon, and probably some others.

I'm very cautious of not over cooking it. You wanna get the best out of the veggies and it doing the raw thing is essential to that. So do you add in the flavoring separately?

One of the reasons I like Thai food is that it has the spiciness of Indian food, but the vegies aren't overcooked. Vegetables in Indian food are almost always overcooked. My way of solving the problem is to cook the spices in oil with a vegie that I don't mind being overcooked (like potatoes) and then add the other vegies later. I think Indian food with lightly cooked vegetables is better if left at least overnight and then reheated. The spices then have a chance to soak in. I like Italian food treated the same way - better the next day. I could eat pasta for every meal. I'll even eat it for breakfast.

So the truth is, nobody except Kobe and that girl knows what really happened, so I don't think it's fair to give him the label of "rapist" when you don't know anything.

More people in the world are lactose intolerant than there are people who can tolerate it. People with lighter skin evolved in northern climates where more sources of protein were needed. If every time you needed protein you killed the cow, you'd soon be out of protein. Some people in warmer climates drink milk as well. The Masai in East Africa drink a mixture of milk and blood from a cow. My feeling about milk is that you should be weaned by now.
Elephants are vegan and, as far as I can tell, they don't lack strength and live a long time.

Nothing is wrong with drinking organic milk. Normal milk has A LOT of antibiotics in it that could harm you (in getting immune for them for instance), and the cows are made pregnant on purpose so that they will keep making milk.
and there is a difference between plants and animals, if I have to explain that, then it would be VERY silly.

Come on, eating vegetables is not anything like eating animals.Yeah, at least animals taste good.
Good example with the carrot by the way. It's not like any of the common animals, used for food, would be 'crying about family' either.
It's a different story with mushrooms though. Their behavior is very collective. And they have sex. A lot. I think this has been scientifically proved in the past. But I could be wrong. So taking down one mushroom is almost equal to a whole massacre of mushrooms. Think about it, you evil vegetarians.

If you still drink milk, you aren't weaned
Then I don't wanna be weaned.
I was sneaking up on a carrot recently and it started crying about its children and family back home. I didn't listen to its sob story and viciously ripped it from the ground. It only screamed for mercy a few minutes and then stopped.
Murderous bastard!!! :omg:
I'm having a crunchy pork chop right now. Miam-miam... :prop: And some sliced carrot with pea as well.
Life is brutal:

"All plants have sex" was a favorite quote by my honors biology teacher. You must be referring the fact that mushrooms are fungus and have a difference in they way they have intercourse. Are you referring to the fact that they actually come together instead of spraying spores at each other? I don't remember, but in any case, it's not much different than how other plants or aquatic life do it, without physical contact.
btw, besides humans, it's supposedly proven dolphins are the only other animal to have sex for pleasure and not just procreation. I knew they were playful!

who doesn't like sex?
who doen't like humans, when they are being playful?
I think I see a connection as to why we identify with dophins...ahhh beautiful creatures they are.
....and how the hell did we get into this?
