I like all kinds of horror flicks from creepy/psychological thrillers to your late 80's early 90's slasher films.........but horror films I've been getting into lately are japanese horror......like "Ju-On" (aka The Grudge) ....and "Versus"....they've seemed to have single handedly revitalized the genre......."Ju-On" isn't your typical ghost story....it has a strong backbone to it that altogether just gave me the creeps.....and with "Versus"....it isn't your typical zombie flick....it has a backbone to the story as well with awesome kung fu fighting scenes might I add.... .......I highly recommend both films......I'd love to hear other peoples thoughts on the horror genre or movies they liked....

^ that's the reason why there's Horror/comedy flicks...... ...to name a more recent one like "Shaun of the Dead" .......it's not scary at all imo.....the comedy aspect of it kind of makes the whole movie easier to watch for people who scare easy...

Hah, yeap. Army Of Darkness has all elements of being a somewhat cool movie:

the undead
chainsaw
the undead
time travelling
the undead
mages
the undead
a cool maincharacter
the undead
oldskool special effects
the undead
nice humor
the undead
a bit of horror

and if i remember correctly there were a couple of undeads in there too, which in my opinion, is a nice bonus to almost every movie.

Yup, love em... think I mentioned this over in another thread at some point, but the Italians produce some amazing horror films - Argento and Fulci being two directors I really love (Argento's daughter, Asia, was recently in XXX with Vin Diesel, but when she was younger she appeared in a bunch of Argento-produced horror films, and in many of those I think she looks strikingly like a young Alizée). Fulci's The Beyond is probably my favorite flick of all, it's a real masterpiece. So yeah, I'm a big fan of the genre... I actually got interested in Alizée more (I had been aware of her since Moi Lolita, just never took much notice) after seeing her mentioned in the forums at www.horrordvds.com... though if you go their looking for the thread, you'll probably be offended (with good reason), but let's not go OT bashing them here.

yeah.....I'd consider "Army of Darkness (aka Evil Dead 3)" horror/comedy.....but it tips more to the comedy part imo......it still rocks though....one of my favs too....

and Snatcher42.....as for Fulci and Argento.......yeah they've made some classics........btw what's your take on the remake of Dawn of the Dead?...

Snatcher42

btw what's your take on the remake of Dawn of the Dead?
It's not terrible as far as generic zombie films go (and I have nothing against generic zombie films!), but it can't hope to compare to the original which is just so, so, so much more.

SeeMeRot
15th October 2004, 01:26
^ true......but when I first saw the flick I was in awe......cause I was kind of dissapointed the zombies were moving really fast which contradicted all zombie films to date......but then once I thought about it.....by todays standards a slow moving zombie typically isn't that scary.......now I know there's gonna be those die hard zombie fans that hate the whole idea.......but imo it's good for the genre....and more action in a zombie flick seems to mix really well....oh yeah.....have u heard about Romero's latest "Land of the Dead"? .....it's seems very promising......I'm really looking forward to this one.... :P .....here's the storyline if u havn't heard about it.... Land of the Dead (http://www.horror.com/php/article-500-1.html)

Yeah, I've heard about Land of the Dead, and it does look promising... but Romero's been out of the game so long, who knows how it will turn out?

Re: running zombies, yeah I guess they are more scary... I don't have anything particularly against them, but I feel the best zombie films are those that are about more than just scaring us with an undead menace. The original Dawn simply used the zombies as an apocalyptic set-up to examine character and theme... plus, the fact that the 'protagonists' were faster, smarter, and superior to their foes was what allowed the plot to work the way it did: breaking away from the typical zombie siege mentality until the very end - where it is human avarice (the biker gang, and the heros' refusal to give up their possessions) that destroys everything. Or look at a Zombie film like Fulci's The Beyond, which isn't really concerned with plot, theme, or scares at all - but is rather built up around otherworldly images and sensations.

So I've always felt the whole fast zombie vs. slow zombie debate is kinda missing the point. It's like those technobable debates alot of sci-fi fans have over ships, guns, and hardware (and no offense to them, I'm a major sci-fi geek myself). That's not what makes a good show or movie. It's the characters, themes, and humanity behind it all that counts... even in a horror movie.

^ true.......that's one of the reasons why I love "Day of the Dead" too......it has the human emotion aspect of the people that are going through it.......rather than just gore....which sometimes leaves much to be desired.....

I liked The Ring. There is a sequel coming as well.

yeah that's a good movie......it seems hollywood is catching on to japanese horror flicks.....(Ringu) .....and there latest (The Grudge) remake.....

Yes, SeemeRot (I don't know your name man, sorry -_-), that movie, Ju-on (Grudge) is the ONLY movie that gave me some serious chills, and believe me I have seen my fare share of horror flicks, but after so many years and so many movies only that one was the freaking spookiest of them all, yeah like you said...it just has that enigmatic feel to it...that just makes your skin crawl or jump off your bones :). But I wonder though, are you talking about the original japanese version or the Hollywood modified version? I think the original is creepier.

SeeMeRot
15th October 2004, 11:32
yeah man the original of course.......(subtitles and everything) ... ...heh heh.......yeah man that movie totally gave me the creeps....."Ju-On 2" gave me creeps as well......the whole setup was awesome.....you wouldn't think a little japanese 8 yr old boy can scare ya but he does......and the mother and her crazy gargle/moan......oh man ....u wouldn't think that's a scary sound in real life either.....but it totally has that creepy feeling to it.....oh yeah.....and my real name's Mike...

SeeMeRot
17th October 2004, 22:13
"The Eye" was awesome......but I still havn't seen the original "Ringu" .....I heard it was way scaryer than the Hollywood remake (The Ring)......and if there is a movie coming out for Silent Hill.....I hope the game designers/creators have some part if not all in the making of it.....

Can't believe Exorcist was forgotten. As for me, that would be the scariest even if the special effects don't look as convincing as they used to back when I was younger, but yeah, they still give me the chills. I won't watch it at night 'coz then I wouldn't be able to go to the bathroom alone. By the way, have u guys seen Exorcist: the beginning?

SeeMeRot
17th October 2004, 22:47
of course I remember "The Exorcist".....a classic......but just the original cut was scary......cause I remeber a recut one in the theaters a couple yrs back that was awful and not scary at all.......and nope I havn't seen " Exorcist - The Beginning" ....looks promising though....

Snatcher42
17th October 2004, 22:55
I've heard of people literally laughing themselves out of the theater at the unintentional hilarity of Exorcist - The Beginning... it's that bad.

Melodramatic
17th October 2004, 23:15
Really? I've heard of the opposite. I mean, the movie itself was a hit, it didn't flop so it must be really good. Another is "Ametiville" (dunno if I spelled it right) and "Children of the Corn".

Edit: Also the movie "Carrie" with Sissy spacek. scary as hell. Thats crucifix with the weird lookin jesus gave me nightmares.

SeeMeRot
17th October 2004, 23:16
hmmm...........I think maybe they should have stopped with the sequels and let the original just be.......and I found myself laughing at the recut/re-release of The Exorcist at the theaters as well...

Melodramatic
17th October 2004, 23:18
yea, Linda Blaire with the "spider walk" was insane! lol

Melodramatic

But I guess it was the most scary movie for me bcoz a friend of mine had an actual exorcism due to playing with that weird lookin board w/ all the letters and numbers and with "yes and no" words, and no 1 would believe him and thus ended up in the mental insititution. full of bad memos.

SeeMeRot
18th October 2004, 01:20
ah.......that's beyond me......it's called a "Ouija Board".........my mom wouldn't allow stuff like that in my house as a kid.......what you just mentioned is reason enough why......

loveherfromusa
18th October 2004, 08:29
I enjoy many of them. They are funny.

Real horror stories are stories that could really happen. One of the worst is "The Crush." Alicia Silverstone plays a young neighbor of a 20-something male who lives in the apartment above her house's garage. She seduces him into inappropriate actions (not sex, but getting close) and then turns against him when he rejects her. She then gets him arrested and fired. He must leave and take with him a terrible background even though the parents and others in the town know that the problem is her and not him.

That is scary!

SeeMeRot
18th October 2004, 10:48
^ true......but when a director/storyline can still get to you even though it's fiction......I think that's the best.....like when I first seen "Childs Play"....oh man I remember having trouble sleeping for a week....(cause in 99% of homes there's dolls in the house)...and even though you know that can't really happen......there's always that thought in the back of your head (what if?).....eh the fact that I was so young was probably a factor in my feelings toward that movie......that movie either made you love horror flicks as a child from then on or hate em.....and I think everyone knows where I stand....

18th October 2004, 18:15
movies like IT scares me EASY if i have to go outside, walk in the street and being the only person in he whole street, or a forest :X is even worse...... so IT would be the worse one imo, or Freddy Krueger

Melodramatic
18th October 2004, 18:24
Omg I hate "Child's Play". It's so not scary, but my sister freaks out if she sees chucky. A new installment is "the seed of chucky" lol. When will this saga ever end?! Well, another scary movie for me, is the Omen! I remember seeing it and there was this scene where an evil spirit posessed a japanese porcelain doll. Now that gave me the creeps better than chucky. But there was another movie that was on par with the Exorcist. I dunno what it was but I can still remember an unforgettable scene where they imprisoned some sort of an evil entity underneathe a monastery, and a priest would occasionally pray over the entity torturing it with holy water, then there was this one time when the priest was mocking the holy eucharist by substituting it with sneakers candy bar and suddenly, the huge bloody crucified Christ statue moved and got itself out of the cross and nailed the priest instead to the friggin' cross up side down. anyone ever saw this movie?

Alw

SeeMeRot

I just remembered something. I don't know if this counts coz its a show. Any of you watch "Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction"? Well there was 1 episode where this funeral director had no respect for dead ppl, that whenever a service is done, his men and himself would just push the coffin to the ground not caring about the smash. well, one of the dead bodies belonged to an old lady and her corpse sang: "The aweful man has no respect, for anyone, not even the dead!!!" This gave the funeral director a heart attack and dies. scary scary!

SeeMeRot
20th October 2004, 12:12
ahhh.......that is creepy...... a show I can recall that creeped me out a lot was "Sightings" .....oh man they'd have stuff on there from hauntings/ghosts to ufo's/paranormal......but what always gave me the actual creeps wasn't the footage itself.....it was the background music and extra sounds they added in......oh man that sound producer was a master of the creeps.....or course I was 11 or 12 at the time.....but I know I'd still be creeped out if the show came out again....

Here's an interesting Alizée-Horror Films connection:

Marcus Nispel, the director of several Mylene Farmer videos (XXL, L'instant X, Comme j'ai mal, Souviens-toi du jour) is also the director of the 2003 re-make of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the 2004 TV re-make of Frankenstein. Cool.
