Woah, even though it's 40 seconds long...it's enough to hear her pure voice...this is awesome!!!

Aww... she's so sweet, simply amazing. I can hardly hear it's live, so much skills.
I wonder when she recorded this. ;o

Sorry to break it to you guys, but her voice has been reworked quite a bit to make it sound "perfect". But ask anyone who's ever heard her live at one of the concerts that it was not pitch perfect (no slight against her though... it's not easy singing and dancing for almost 2 hours straight). But even after all the post-production work on her voice, it still has a bit of the live feel to it, which I'm glad they were able to retain. But it's still not reality as it really was. That's what we have bootlegs for.

/me plays album version, nice bootleg, 40 second clip...

Yeah... I see what you mean... and not just in Alizée's voice, the whole thing is kinda overproduced... somewhat disappointing, actually, cause I would have liked to hear something as different from the studio album as possible (even if that meant leaving in the imperfections).

You may be right, but in all fairness, ive heard several number of bootleg performances of that song with all mixed results. sometimes she nails it, sometimes she doesnt.

What im guessing they might have done was to take the best performances out of the 7 concerts in Olympia and used that. What you are really hearing is not what the audience is hearing; that much is for sure. This is because all the instruments and vocals are fed directly into a mixer instead of going out of huge PA speakers blasting away in Arenas and Stadiums that have major acoustical problems. So what u get on the live CD is a less colored, more pure version of the audio.

Theoretically that is, because it still has to go through post-production process in which volume levels are fixed, compressors and reverb added, along w/ all the other audio tricks. I'm not really sure they would go as far as fixing the pitch, but theres many other embellishments you can add in post production to give it that perfect sound.

Basically, you gain alot of the sounds back compared to a real live expereience, but then you do also lose some of the rawness because of the things they add in post production. You win some you lose some. But the end result is better sound overall.

I think most live dvds go through a similar process, im fairly sure my LinkinPark Live in Texas DVD was given a bit of audio garnishment to make it sound better than live, since i was at one of their shows for that tour.

I would not be surprised if they have taken it one step further on some songs and actually mixed performances to get the best results (at least, on the audio side... would be harder to do with the video)... in other words: verse 1 from concert 2, verse 2 from concert 4, chorus 1 from concert 1, etc...

But anyway, we should keep in mind that MF and LB's philosophy of live material is to touch it up quite alot... they even go as far as to call Mylene's live releases "films" of the show, and not live documents themselves - drawing the distinction that what they release is a polished, touched up representation conveying a sense of the live event - and not a straight presentation of the event itself. Yes, most artists do this to some extent, but these two usually take it as far as you can.

Nothing wrong with that - their artistic choice... but I am a little disappointed personally...

That is possible, but i would think they would want to avoid doing that for consistancy sake. I think it will be likely though, that on the DVD, they will mix video footage from the different concerts as you mentioned. Ive seen 2 recent dvds that have done that, my Linkin Park Live in texas dvd and a Utada Hikaru one.

In the Utada one, u can see her instantly switch between different stage clothes, while performing the same song. In the Linkin Park one, they wear the same clothes, but u can tell by the sweat stains that video footage was taken from 2 different concerts.

I'd expect the DVD to be a mixture of different concert dates, since that's how Mylène's concert DVD's are. The only problem I could see is that her haircut was different at Le Zénith. It wasn't quite as different as it is now, but still enough to surprise me when I saw her. Not that big of a deal though. At least her wardrobe changes are consistent throughout the tour, so no need to worry about that.

Mixing audio from different dates is even easier...

You guys seem to know a little about it, so if I have understood it right, they have 'cleaned' the AMD version they're gonna release as single, but the dvd sound will be, if not completely 'real', as real as possible, with no digital work or stuff like that :?:

Isn't it all supposedly recorded at Olympia, though? I think the mixing will be confined to the 7 shows there, as MG said...

No, I'd guess that what we hear on the single will be pretty much how it sounds on the Live CD and DVD as well (ie, same touch-ups)... just my guess, though...

^^i hope so manu
i remember hearing earlier too that it was basically going to be from the Olympia concert(s) (can't recall if there were more than one)

Where is it said that the DVD will only contain footage from Olympia? There were other venues where there were cameras, including Brussels and Le Zénith (there were quite a few there...they even had one on a crane, hovering above the crowd and making all these fancy moves). So I don't see why they wouldn't use footage from there. If not, it would be a bit disappointing since the atmosphere at Le Zénith was the best out of all the concerts.

Hmm, I can't recall exactly now, but I remember seeing it somewhere... I think at one point the DVD was even going to be called "Olympia" instead of "Live".

Well we don't know for sure. But I would guess that the CD version will be pretty much identical to the DVD version, althoug maybe w/ lessened background audience noise. All the digital cleanup, will probably still be there.

My mistake about the Olympia thing, i got it off the blurb on the back of the Promo info(I cant read French). After reading the translation i saw that this may not be so, and that it will likely span across the different tour cities.

One cant really expect the 'live version' to sound excactly the same as in the concert. Afterall, She did not sing it in the studio, thats what matters.
Now either the Live-Amélie version is "touched up" more or less, it shouldnt matter.
Why? Because Mylene and Laurent are artists. As far as im concerned, the live version of AMD sounds artistically very good.
I listened to the 40 sec clip and i like it. Its great. 'Cant wait to hear the full duration song.

^^ Right, I'm not outraged or surprised, but I do think many of us would have liked it left just a little more "raw" than how it seems based on this clip. As I said before, "most artists do this to some extent, but these two [MF&LB] usually take it as far as you can. Nothing wrong with that - their artistic choice... but I am a little disappointed personally..." I say that because I come from groups like Iron Maiden, who can release a live album from more or less untouched soundboard recordings (Rock in Rio), and it sounds f'ing great.

My research tells me that MF does alot of touch ups on her live albums and dvds. Considering that alot of the concert bootlegs alizee sounds like crap(good in some of them too) I am sure that is the case here. It will be reworked to make it almost perfect. If you have seen some of MF live concerts...its too amazing to be live but in reality most of them have been reworked and fixed up to make it sound better obviously. Considering all this I wouldn't be surprised if that is what they done for Alizee.

Manu

Yeah maybe it sounds a bit strange now cos we have got used to those bootlegs that had been recorded with hand tape recorders or mobile phones, so the sound was not in stereo, and with crazy people all around in the arena shouting, etc.
It would be logical if the sound in the DVD is the same as in the CD, but I still am a bit confused with the AMD thing, mainly cos I thought they were gonna release as single the extract of this song in the CD live, so I hope all my doubts get cleared once I can listen to all the stuff.

my initial impression of bootlegs - that most recent one with the guy screaming right next to the recorder
that didn't leave me with a very good impression, so pretty much every other bootleg i see/listen to seems good to me

The ones from Nice were quite... nice. I listen to them in the car on occasion, mind-blowing quality for a fan in the audience with a recorder :)

I'm a little disappointed. We hear it's not pure live... it has been changed in studio, and I can't bear that. It's like Mylène's lives...

Yeah but, what we have to bare in mind here is, not everyone wants to hear the screaming fans over Alizée's voice. Like someone said here, that why we have bootlegs for. To here her LIVE.. listen to the nice concert.. But, this song needs promoted well.. and in all fairness.. it needs to be done the way its been done. You still hear her voice, its still live.. its just edited in a way thats going to sell.

If they released the live version with no audio editing, there would be hell on.. as people would be complaing about the quality.. I think its been done the correct way, and we have the bootlegs to capture the full concert atmosphere =)

John
2nd September 2004, 17:00
From the marketing aspect you need to make it sound as good as possible. If it sounds like crap who will want it? When I say crap I don't mean only the background noise, I mean the actual voice of the singer.

I personally only want true live to judge how good/bad they sing. Besides that fixing it up is one of the best things they can do.

Thats rarely ever a problem, since most 5.1 surround tracks isolate the audience noise mainly to the rear channels. Since all the instruments and vocals are directly line fed into a mixer, it is almost completely isolated from any crowd noise. Audience noise is usually recorded on a seperate mic. The audio engineer can then choose how they want to mix in the crowd noise and exactly what volume it should be.
