View Full Version : Do you learn French for Alizée?
Greg (Polonais)

French is one of the most important world languages. It is so important in fact that I decided to learn it, even though I don't have any particularly strong reason to do that. In fact I tend to dislike the present-day France, its role in the EU and the contemporary French culture. It was really difficult for me to find any positive associations with France that would boost my motivation until I came across Alizée (ok, she's not exactly French, but we can stretch the facts a bit).
I can't say I'm learning French only becease of her, but she is one my strongest motivators. It is nice to think that I can understand what she says or read about her or send her birthday greetings.
Judging by the popularity of the programmes for learning French among the users of Alizée DC++ hub, I think Alizée deserves a great credit for promoting French language in the world. Indeed, I think she should be given some kind of official recognition for it from Alliance Francaise or some such organization. I wonder how many people feel attracted to French principally because of Alizée. :?:
It's a poll^^^ so vote please!

Same here greg. Even though She is my 'strongest motivator', i also think, that the french language could be useful even then if i am not using it only to speak/write to Alizée
... or something like that.

Yeah.. i started learning french around 2 years ago. Using a small program that wasn't much good. So i was on the internet and i found pimsluer website. I bought the first 10 lessons from them, money back if i wasnt happy with it... and i was. Ever since then, i got all 96 lessons , CD 1, 2 and 3. Now its fun and easy to learn it at my own pace. I did start to learn this because of Alizée.. now its useful as i can communicate with french customers in my job as well understand most of her interviews and such.
French is so much fun to learn... 8)

Yes, DavidAlizée, Pimsleur is a very effective programme and I must thank you for bringing it on the hub. Of course it's just a beginning but it's a very good beginning because it gives you the confidence that you can really use the little of French that you have learned to communicate in typical everyday situations. I think learning to speak and understand spoken French is the most difficult thing and Pimsleur does a good job. By the way, I have added some new stuff to my French lingo file (Routlege Colloquial French and French Language Builder) - it's a pity you're passive.

I didn't start learning French because of Alizée (she was only 9 years old when I started :P ), but if it wasn't for her, I probably wouldn't be as proficient in French, and I definitely wouldn't have had as much fun learning the language.
I agree with Greg concerning Pimsleur; in the one lesson that I listened to, just for fun, it seemed like a good program, giving you practical French that you could use if you stepped off the plane in Paris tomorrow.

I think Thunder is learning French so he might be interested in these and if not Chromex is bound to help. I haven't used them yet but as far as I can see, they are worth having - not as effective a learning tool as Pimsleur but they have some very useful vocabulary and you can listen to them while driving (mp3) or wherever.
You're always welcome Mate! :D

Im not sure wheather to vote yes or no. I've always wanted to visit france even before I found about Alizée but I never really though about learning french cause I thought it would be hard. When I heard people talking about pimsleur on the DC++ hub it got me curious about so I got it. Its a very good program to use and the lessons arnt that long, even though I've gotten frusrated a bit I just remind myself that I could one day meet Alizée and actually have at least a small conversation with her. So I guess ill vote yes. Thnx David for bringing it on the hub .

Alizée certainly is the spotlight that leads me to the French path, but also the entire Française chanson cercle would make great effects on my determination to enhance that.

I took three years of french in highschool. My teacher was cool so I was eager to learn it. Though its been 3-4 years since I really studied it I lost quite a bit. Listening to Alizee though has refreshed my memory dramatically and in my spare time I go back to my old books and I still remember so much. My spelling is horrible though, Id rather speak it with my bad accent then spell it :)

Hehe, it was "I'm Fed Up". After a long day, the ole brain just didn't want to work. :D
The song just sounds more plesant to the ear in French, and to me anyway, kinda odd in English. Therefore, I must learn French, hehe.

Wait a second. Alizée is not exactly French? Did I miss something?
And no, I didn't start learning French because of her. I'm rather a francophile so liking Alizée would have come sooner or later. But she's certainly an inspiration for me to learn it with more vigor and enthusiasm; and to listen to other French music as well.

Everyone there (except for maybe really old people) speaks French as their native language. You can learn Corsu as a second or third language in school though.

So would Corsu be much different than French?

So would Corsu be much different than French?
The Corsicans like to think of it as an independent Roman language, but it is mostly considered as a dialect of Italian. If you want to hear it, download "Corsica" by Petru Gelfucci. A very nice song. Alizée was asked to say "good evening" in Corsu during the interview after the second Ma Priere performance. I don't know if she knows much more of it, but I doubt it for if she did she would probably also understand Italian. However, she is proud of her origins and apparently thinks of Corsicans as slightly different than the French.

I'd suggest starting with an audio programme like Pimsleur. You will easily pick up the basics, which will encourage you to go further. Besides, speaking and understanding spoken French is much more difficult than reading it, and that's what the programme will teach you.
I think it is dangerous to start learning French from books only, because you tend to forget about the phonetics, and you might develop bad habits of pronunciation, especially if your native language is spoken the way it is written. I guess Malay is. If you're Chinese, it could be even more difficult, but don't lose heart anyway. :D Backinblack should be able to advise you better.

It's an interesting subject
I think that when you are from an island you get very attached to it, more than if you are from a continental region. I'm sure Alizée is proud to be Corsican as much as she is proud to be French.
In my opinion when she performs in "mainland" France (On tv or stage) she is proud to represent her island (Corsica) ... But when she is abroad (out of France) she is proud to represent her country (France). She said it about 1000 times in interviews.
I regret she didn't perform any concert in Corsica, I won't say she is not popular there, she has probably the same proportion of Fans than in the rest of France, but it was probably not profitable to make just 1 or 2 concert(s) there.
As for Corsu, it is extremely closed to Italian, and Alizée probably knows some words and expressions she heard here and there.

I don't know French Deluxe. Pimsleur consists of 3 parts. Each contains 30 half-hour lessons plus some written materials. One part, if it is zipped or packed somehow, should be around 200MB. But if someone shares an unpacked Pimsleur, you can download it lesson by lesson. It will be much larger then. Try the first several lessons and see if you like it. I did and many other people too. You can also find it on the Alizee hub. It was DavidAlizée who first brought it there.
